I'm confused

I have called OPC West London to check about changing my battery on the 997.
They say it has to be a Porsche one to maintain the Extended Warranty, as it has to be a Porsche part.

I've just called OPC Cambridge which is where I bought my car from, and just spoke to Martin in Service (Very nice chap) who says that as long as the battery is the same voltage/spec, then that's fine and as it's not covered by the extended warranty anyway, then fitting a Bosch one would be fine.

What shall I do??

BTW, Bosch S5 is £55 at costco and Porsche one is £160!

Surely that can't be true...?! They can't make you pay for a Porsche (rubbish) one when the Bosch ones are so much better..?

i'm not auto electrician but the Bosch unit had slightly different cold cranking current and ampere hour rating - this may affect the charging rate from the alternator. I'm not sure how big an impact it is, but i read the info on a BMW forum yesterday and the issue of CCA and Ah was raised there as an issue ??

I have the Bosch unit fitted and have no issues at all so far - many people have had Bosch ones for years with no issues. Porsche are clamping down to a silly degree with their new extended warranty. If you aren't bothered about the warranty then go Bosch, if you are seek further clarification from another OPC or get it in writing from Cambridge

Get the cheap/better battery and take your waranty issues to OPC Cambridge!
All OPCs have different opinions on what's ok or not over so many things, shop around

Take Martins advise he is helpful, as you get the car serviced at cambridge (i think) there should be no problem when it comes to warranty issues. The Porsche battery i think is well over priced.

Thanks Phil,

Yes, OPC Cambridge have serviced my previous car for ages and am very happy with them.

I'll go for the Bosch then!....the money I save will only be spent with them eventually anyway as I need a new telephone control module at £600! [:(]

I think they are Straight at cambridge, and they are pro the club. However i am switching on my next service to JZ Mactech as i am finding OPC bills to much even for my much loved 10 year old 996 Also if there is a problem that can be fixed it is replaced instead just the way it is done at OPC i will return to them if i am lucky enough to upgrade one day.

Cheers Phil

The interpretation of the new warranty conditions seems to be causing some OPCs confusion.

Some seem to have adopted an over-zealous attitude, whilst others seem to be perfectly sensible about it.

IMO anyone who has a new/newish Porsche, and wants to keep it original and within the official franchise, then the new warranty is probably the best option..
