I'm really worried

I was really pleased when I bought my 2001 986 2.7 last year. It is immaculate and had only 42K on the clock. Apart from a battery/alarm problem which I sought advice for on here, so far I have had no problems. I do however read many of the threads on this forum and I seem to see no end of discussions on the probability of Porsche engines expiring. This is really worrying me and I'm beginning to wonder if I should trade in for something apparently more robust. I have been on other marque forums over the years and I have never seen so much discussion about engine failures. Is there any reassurance to be had?

Sadly the only posts you read are the few issues .. no one posts "my car has no problem" .. that is the nature of forums

I have had 6 Boxsters from launch .. split equally between 986's and 987's .. just ordered a 981 GTS ... never had a major issue from any of them

The issues are more of a problem for 996/997's.

the Boxster incident rates are below 5% of the 996/997's and the most reliable of all boxsters is the 2.7. Its not really something you should be worrying about.
