All,

Am having intermittent issues starting my car. Seems to be after I have driven it...parked up....and go to start it. Car is dead on the key. Its almost as if the immobiliser while its been disengaged (ie: red light is not beeping following the usual protocol) the car wont start.

Happened a few times.....again this morning....faffed around a few times and eventually after leaving it for a few mins.....the car started.

Anyone had similar isssues? could this be an easy fix or do you think the immobiliser is old style and needs to be replaced?

Its not great going out and not having confidence that the car will start again!!!

Any thoughts/advice appreciated

hmm...maybe...but am pretty sure a new one was fitted recently. Any way of knowing for sure if its one or the other.

i checked my history file - the META immobiliser was installed in 1999.

starter motor was replaced on 24/2/09 - 15k miles ago.

[FONT=verdana, geneva"]Quick one; does anything happen when you turn the key - e.g. rear fan blowers start up, ABS pump starts etc..? Had any new wiring done elsewhere recently - e.g. audio/speakers etc?

First chance I get I will be yanking out the after market Clifford immobiliser I have - it's a pain in the arse to be honest. The factory one is just fine. Some point I'll replace it with an ignition cut-out switch in the cockpit somewhere.

Be interested to know what you find out.

Hi Marcus - definitelynoted the rear blower working (was on 1 on the fan speed dial). Quite a few other noises which to be honest i am not sure if they are abs pumps or not.

No new wiring recently.

Will get Joe to have a look at HP.......these things are not my forte.

[FONT=verdana, geneva"]I've had it happen to me once a couple of months ago - parked up outside a shop, then like you, nothing. Left it for a couple of mins then tried again and fine. The only thing different thing was this was after a 100 mile journey and the oil temp was really high and had been stalling in traffic... I put it down to something elsewhere due to this had prevented start up until a tad cooler..

I had a similar problem with intermittent starting and thought it was immobiliser related, played around with everything and then found it was the DME relay, there's plenty of more informed knowledge than mine on the forum but it's maybe worth considering as if you haven't got one it's worth buying one as a spare anyway.

How do you recognize what state your immobilizer is in? With mine, if the ignition has been off for 30 seconds the LED flashes then when I put the key in the ignition (with dash lights on), the LED is permanently on. I then have to cancel it, the LED goes out and I start the car.

Trying to work if the immobilizer is being cancelled is a key here to determining if the immobilizer is the problem or something else.

Immobilizers are the work of the devil - commonly known as Insurance companies! []

Faulty M36 Immobiliser
If your Meta immobiliser is no longer responding to the touchkey, look inside the socket for three connection pins, two on one side & one pin in the centre position on the other side, if any of the pins are missing replace the socket

Andrew,

Found this on the net, something to check if it's the same as yours.

Andy.

hey bigun...thank for that post....i think thats confirmed that the META unit has actually been replaced as that interface still exists yet I dont use it to disarm the immobiliser.

I dropped the car into HP today and was able to replicate the issue (dead on the key with the immobiliser is disengaged)......looks like a starter motor problem.

Will let you know more when I get the diagnosis later in the week
