Immobiliser type switch

Apologies if this sort of thing has been covered before but as everyone knows the search function is a PITA.

Having been removing the carpets and some trim panels to try and find the cause of the water leak recently I happened to notice the following switch hanging down from behind the cd player by my feet in the drivers footwell...

I noticed it whilst driving as it was resting on my leg. Anyway Ive never seen such a switch in a car before so decided in a Homer Simpson style manner to press it whilst I was out driving the other day. The engine cut out. The engine would not fire back up until I flicked the switch again.

Is this just some sort of aftermarket immobiliser? My 944 already has a aftermarket immobiliser so this seems a bit unneccesary. Should I just leave it be, I presume it cant do any harm [&:]

Apologies for the newbie question but ive never had a car with one of these.

I would definietly say so mate. The esiest way to immobilise an engine (at least one of the 944 era) is to put an earth on the coil and make it switchable - no spark to the engine. I would trace where it goes to. I put money it will lead to the ignition circuit.
