Immobilizer

I might make myself look silly here. Is the immobilizer on the 1990- 964 standard or would it have been fitted by the previous owner?
if it was standard, what make/category is it?
I do know that several 964's I looked at had the same model.
Insurance reasons[8D]
Cheers.

Dean,

There was an alarm/immobilser fitted as standard - one type for the 1989-1990 cars (made by Hella I believe) and a slightly different one for the 1991-1994 cars. AFAIK it does not meet Thatcham Cat 1 standard as is often required by insurance companies. Most owners have a second alarm fitted which does meet the required standard.

Many cars on the secondhand market will already have a second alarm fitted so you need to be sure what you have.

Dave

I have the same year car and it has what seems to be a 'factory' immobiliser fitted. It has a small male fob on the key ring that you insert into the slot which on mine is fitted down on the floor console near the spoiler control.

As thatcham standards didn't exist then it doesn't have a thatcham rating but seem to be classed as 'thatcham category 2' for insurance purposes (ie engine immobiliser not full closure alarm). I told my insurer it didn't have a thatcham rating as they didn't exist then and was an immobilser not an alarm.

I use a specialist insurer rather than a general one so it wasn't a problem. It certainly doesn't meet thatcham cat 1 standard.

Hope that helps.

Ian.
