I could see this being the opening of an "alternative maintenance" thread, for all fans of "percussive maintenance".
OK... One from me... what I used to call a "WD40 Service"... I'm sure it is used by many back-street garages to save all that nasty changing of oil and fiddly sparking plug things. Method: Open bonnet, hold open with left arm. With can of WD40 in right hand, liberally spray over everything in the engine bay. Close bonnet. Note it is even more effective if the engine is running at the time.
The sad thing is... it really seems to work, suddenly the whole thing quietens down and runs smoother. I didn't say that... no... not me...

Just be careful here, if the problem is a frayed wire and you reach the point it connects it can take your finger off. The mechanism is very powerful. [
