IMPORTANT: RMS Seal handling instructions

<This is a repost. Not sure if you Box guys read the 996 Forum.>

The following is a PNA TSB providing instruction for how to handle the Rear Main Crankshaft Seal during installation. In
particular, the instruction that the Seal should be installed "DRY". not pre-oiled. I took my car in today again for yet
another seal replacement and gave the service manager a copy of this TSB. He was not aware that the seal needs
to be installed DRY.

During RMS replacement, it is in your own interest to see that your OPC engineer adheres to this procedure.

They are supposed to spit on it, cross the fingers, and pray.

It looks like 999 113 490 40 is now 999 113 490 41. Jeff

Yes I agree with your comment. The mind boggles. You may want to read up my comment in the 996 RMS thread. It is my beliefe the OPC engineer does not follow correct install and handling procedures.

You are so right!

I am a little confused - Does this technical bulletin ORIGINATE in America or did it originate in Germany in which case why wasn't it issued to all OPC's worldwide. If it did originate in the States do they not have any feedback arrangements with Germany? Whatever it just sounds incompetent to me

The disclaimer at the bottom of Scousers JPEG states that it's a Porsche Cars North America document. It may be that a similar doc exists for other markets, but Scousers experience indicates the dealers don't read or digest every comment. Thus when all the warranty sh*t flies, the importer can disown the issue as they can say the dealer didn't follow best practice though how anyone can ever prove what actually happended to their car will be a mystery.

A bulletin like that would orginate in Germany since it is not specific for the US market. There are just over 200 bulletins on different subjects. By law these bulletins are open to the public.

I have asked before but got no response, do you not have similar bulletins for the UK market that you can get your hands on. Jeff

Jeff

In answer to yours (and from experience) Independent Porsche Dealers in the UK were not able to formally able to obtain that type of information let alone the punters who buy the product.

Keep well,
