Importing bits - tax?

I'm thinking about importing some wheels from the US (Zuffenhaus "Fuchs" style alloys - anyone any experience of them?). I have a hazy recollection of a thread on here mentioning the tax situation about importing bits from the US (sales tax, VAT, import duty ...) but can't find it. Does anyone know what the rules are? Thanks

No experience of the wheels, I'm afraid.

When you import anything from the US, Customs work out the goods value at their current exchange rate, add the carriage costs, add the import duty (generally around 3-4% for car stuff) to that, and then add VAT on top of the whole lot. The carrier will generally want payment of the duty and VAT before they will deliver.

Not a good time to be buying, as the exchange rate has taken a dive.....

i ordered aprox 200 pounds worth of bikeparts (gearbox bearings, shafts .etc) from a place in the states a few weeks ago . they arrived last week and i had to pay a fee of 48 pounds to get my parts 40 customs and 8 royal mail surcharge.(it was still only 2/3 of the price of them in the uk)

Hmm. It is indeed getting a bit expensive. So I'm looking at alternatives from Europe, including genuine Fuchs. I imagine that if I pay VAT in another EU country, I don't pay any import duty or VAT in the UK?

For fuchs have you tried asking Jasmine Porschalink? They maybe able to help you out if you havn't.

That is correct. If you are not VAT registered, you pay the VAT at the rate of the member state, and no UK duty or VAT.
