Improving brakes on 930

Does anyone have any experience of improving the brake setup on a 1984 930 turbo? I find the brakes on mine very tetchy - they need a lot of pedal force to grip hard then they just lock up. They lack feel but they arent spongey, it just feels like the car has no servo assist. Is this normal or should i get the brakes/servo inspected? I do need a new set of disks all round which I am trying to sort out (been waiting for Type911 to get stock in since March) so this may improve things a little.

Now normally I would just go for a brake upgrade kit with larger disks and callipers BUT I have 16" wheels that I want to keep (the upgrades I have seen require at least 17" wheels).

Does anyone know of a master cylinder or servo upgrade?
What about improved callipers to fit on standard disks?

I will be fitting braided hoses as a matter of course.

You can buy a larger diameter master cylinder that will fit our cars (Mercedes IIRC) but that will mean you have to push even harder and make things worse by what you are saying.

Are you sure your calipers have not seized at all? Have you made sure you can rotate your wheels freely?

Maybe your pads have glazed and lost their friction?

A test for a servo is to feel the pedal while the engine is running, then turn of the engine and see how many times you can pump the pedal before you cannot push the pedal down as far. I can check on my 3.2 for you but IIRC most cars are 3 times. If you get no change at all then your servo is shot or something is not connected. They have a non return valve pushed in them too where the vacuum hose connects to it.
 
Cheers Nathan. I will try the servo tests. The vacuum is provided by a pump right - not the manifold?
I ordered some disks so will fit them asap.

The callipers were seized when I went to buy the car as it had been stored for ages. Only done 5000 miles in the last 10 years but was used regular before then. I dont drive the car hard so I would have hoped that if the disks were glazed they would have bedded in again slightly (done 3000 miles since I bought it) but not at all!

They reckon you can fit some of the upgrade kits with 16" modular rims. This might be the way forward for me.
A friend has offered me his old 993 3.6na calliper set so I will see if they are any better that my 930 ones.
 
I found using EBC green stuff pads, braided lines and replacing the fluid really improved my 930 brakes. Of particular note were the flexible lines that were probably 20+ years old on my car and when sliced open were showing signs of restriction.
 
9m fitted 993 calipers up front and put my front calipers on the rear, no other mods other than braided lines, works great, you will need to buy a bracket for the fronts though, it all fits great behind my 16" wheels, vast improvement

Edit: Still using the original disks too
 
food for thought. How old are the tyres, if they are quite ancient and regardless of make you may well find that this is your problem. Fit a new set of tyres that have decent grip you may well find your problem is solved. A mate many moons ago had a similar problem with old tyres and would lock the fronts as soon as you stood on the brakes. Real scary, a new set of rubber cured the problem.
 
Gra, Badly needs new tyres so will be doing that asap. I am going to do a comparison between the speed recorded on my satnav and on my speedo and see if I can adjust the tyre sizes so its more accurate. If it works out that I need monster truck tyres then maybe give it a miss.

I like the sound of the 993 callipers on the front and fronts on the back, especially if I can keep my disks. Do 9m sell the brackets separately I wonder?

Give them a bell, you might want to do the braided lines, good pads and some quality fluid, they will give you all the advice you need. I found the brakes started to fade on a track day, i'll have srf or some other fluid on the next change. If you drive the car hard then it might be worth looking at adding some vents. All i know is mine work great in most conditions, much much better than the standard set up
