Improving eleccy windows performance

Chaps,

A quickie.

I know that 944's are not know for having good electric windows, but I am currently having to press the 'close' button on mine shortly after I set off, to ensure that they are closed by the time I arrive ...

What can be done to make them a bit quicker?

Oli.

its a real pain isn't it. They were really slow right from new. My old Mk1 Mondey has leccy windows that shoot up and down so fast you are scared you'll lose your elbow. Also they have the one touch automatic down feature which is brilliant.

I reckon it would be a lot of work to improve a 944. You'd have to remove the motor and get it serviced or replace with a newer unit and grease up all the linkage maybe put new felt guides in would help a lot too. Perhaps there is a faster stronger motor drive system from another Piggy that would fit ? It would be worth all the work then

I had a friend with a 928 he replaced his motors with ones from ford and said they were the same mounts although I have never investigated .I have thought about it as it is one of the jobs to do on my turbo the passenger window takes almost a minute to open and close

Sounds like your motors are knackered. It takes only a second or two for the electric windows to work on my car. Yes slower than a modern, but not as bad as you describe.

Take the winder mechanism out of the door. It looks as if it is impossible to remove it but it does come out. Where the two arms pivot, spray with WD40. If you have access to heat then even better. I had to hammer one of mine to get it to swing easily (that sounds painful!) and then before reinstalling liberally spread grease where the two arms touch each other. Make sure you get the grease in all the right places. Take the motor off the mechanism and connect back onto the connection in the door. Check to see how good the motor turns without any load.
Lubricate the runners / guides for the windows (hair shampoo works well - dont use washing up liquid as that contains salt)
Clean all contacts.
"The installation is the reversal of the removal procedure"
Spray liberally with WD40 once windows are back together.
Replace door cards.
Take car for test drive to ensure correct operation.

Cheers

Chaps,

Thanks - lots of good ideas there. I can believe that they were slow from new, but time and dirt will have taken their toll. Fred - good ideas for cleaning it up, thanks. I'll try that when I have a spare Saturday. (An aside - are you sure that hair shampoo doesn't contain salt? I thought it did ... )

Wil - replacing the motors with Ford ones? Now that's an interesting thought ... Thanks.

Oli.

Oli,
If it does then it is certainly a lot less than washing up liquid. (My hair never smells salty after I've washed it!)[:)]
Alan's suggestion of using silicon spray is a good alternative though.

Cheers,

I would ask if you have any hair shampoo left over from when you needed it but it has probably evaporated by now.[:)]
Do you use Zymol or Turtle Wax?

Cheers,
