improving gearshift on 996

Hi,

I read on another post about someone fitting a standard 997 shift mechanism to a 996 which was a direct replacement but shortened the throw by 10-15%.

Can anyone confirm if this is a straight forward replacement and if so are there any instructions available on how to remove and replace?

Thanks

I've never had the need to do it [;)] but it looks reasonably easy to me: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=231644

Hi jetbox,
I did this mod on my C2 cab and i would highly recommend it!!! Much better feel as well as the slightly shortened throw. Some people complained of it making the gear-change "notchy" but it is no worse than it was before. As for how easy it is to do - it is!!! Mind you, i am an engineer by trade[:D] Even so, if you literally follow the instructions, so long as you are capable of using a crewdriver then you should find it ok.
Good luck!

The 997 version can be used in the 996 and is a much simpler install than the post below as you replace the complete shift mechanism rather than just shifter. Added bonus for this is the mod is reversible should you wish to retain it post sale.

The 997 short shift kit is less notchy than the 996/986 OEM or B&M version.

I agree with Nick's comments about ease of install. It was me who posted about the benefits last year. I stiil think its a great mod @ lower cost than the aftermarkt kits & less work because you don't have to take the shifter mechanism apart.
Console removal is not too difficult - as long as you work your way carefully through all the retention screws & wiring plugs for window switch, ashtray light & rear console alarm sensor etc.

How much does the kit cost then, not counting installation costs? And any suggestions for a good source?

From your local OPC

The standard 997 shift (what Porsche term a "gearshift bracket") is 997.424.010.00 at £137.82 so £124.04 with the 10% club members discount

The official Short-Shift kit (IXCZ) for the 996 is now the 997 version 997.424.983.00 at £279.19 This gives a 20% reduction in throw from the standard 997 shift so from the original 996 perhaps as much a 30%+ reduction

Hi,

Thanks for all your replies. I have just bought a new standard 997 shifter. This is this weekends DIY project.

Jetbox,

I see you picked up the one from 685302 on ebay. I had my eye on that but never got round to bidding. Serves me right at £36 it was a bargin[;)]

I ended up buying something completely pointless but pretty never the less from him.

Porsche 996 VTG Desk Paperweight

The description is wrong as the 996 never had VTG Turbos they didn't arrive till the 997 but still a nice little toy for the collection.

New gear shift fitted successfully. Took about an hour and has made quite a difference to the feel og the gearchange. Well pleased for £36..................

Thanks all for the help.
