I have a C4S and was curious if there are any inexpensive ways of improving that glorious rumble that the flat six produces. I am aware of a stainless steel replacement that apparently improves this sound however I was told that you can drill into the existing box's to produce this improved sound at no extra cost? are any of you aware of such a procedure or should I just leave well alone! Good advise warmly welcomed....[&:]

You can take off the plastic cover to the air filter and drill a number of holes which will improve the induction noise.
Fit a K&N filter - I have been down that route and it does improve the sound but found the car was better without.
The biggest improvement is to fit a set of Fabspeed Maxflo's and smile all the time[]

I can recommend 'carphonics' from Ninemeister. Driven gently you keep your neighbours but under load the sound is just glorious.

I have fitted RSB similar to RSR mufflers - please search the forum for my earlier posts. ( I would find the link for you but I am in the States at the moment and short of time)
The sound is a classic 911 aircooled sound (before all the sound regs) which will not disturb the neighbours.... a few of us have them they are great.

yes you can drill the air box,, it was (proabably still is) possible to buy the sound package from porsche,,, and there have been a few on e.bay,,, basically its the exact same air box, in terms of size and shape,, but has a shiny chrome on the inlet side,,, but the trick is,, that porsche drilled a number of app 8mm holes in the side,, if you take of the standard box that you have and compare it with the sound one,, you will actually see the squares on the side (made during injection moulding) that they drill out.... (they wont be drilled on the original) probably formed during moulding..
I did this mod to mine after trying the original one,,,,, takes about half and hour with a drill and a 8mm bit,,,,
as for the sound,, you get slightly more induction noise during full throttle,, apart from that it sounds the same, when driving normally,,,,
mate of mine has the fab speed and was trying to sell it,,, as his wife thought it was too noisey,, they alos have a great web site that allows you to hear what they sound like.... they' not cheap !
personally,, I think the standard sound with the standard exhaust is great and with the air box drilled, you get a nice induction note when you accelerate hard......
KN's,,, have read lots about these,,,, and had one on last car,, did not notice any difference,,,,either in noise or performance,,,, dyno may tell a different story,, but one of the club guys had one of those,, expensive cone jobs on his gt3,, sounds good,,,, but droped 8bhp on the dyno at ninemiester........against standard filter,,,,,,,
do ya think the designers at porsche,, dont know what they are on about !
seen as I'm babbling on,, was told by anouther chap in the club that when he fitted cat by pass pipes onto standard exhaust,, got nice noise,, but 15bhp less on dyno although with re.map this can be re-gained
cheers

Re K&N filters.
Reported on here that I had gone back to the paper OEM one and the car was much better. Not to let things lie, as I had fitted the Fabspeed Maxflo's thought I would try the K&N filter again.
The low rev jerkiness was not present but the car did not feel as lively so back to the OEM filter.
Personally think that to benefit from the filter a remap would be necessary and then that does not make economic sense!

We fitted RSR mufflers - see Maurice's post - last year, bought from Gert Carnwal. Our aim was exactly the same as yours, namely to improve the sound. We heard this system on someone elses car at Brands last August and decided to try them - yes TRY. This system is marketed on a trial basis - 3 weeks - and you can send them back if you don't like them just paying for the return p&p. If you decide to keep them you pay Gert 400Euros and send your old silencers back. They have turned out to be just what we wanted - a lovely deep burble on tickover which doesn't upset the neighbours like a sports exhaust can, and wonderful howl on full chat!! Cruising on the motorway is quiet and unintrusive. I have no idea about bhp difference but certainly haven't noticed any reduction - BIG increase in the grin factor though!! Have noticed a maturing of the sound with use. Happy to recommend and being available on trial first, what have you got to loose. PS They offer chrome tips - the ones with the flat underside and new heat shields. The latter is particularly important as your originals will probabley be in very poor health. Easy to check before ordering. PPS Talk to Gert on the phone, so helpful.

Ive heard Charles and Lauras 993 and ill second that, it really does sound great[] - maybee i could steel it and bodge it onto my 924 []
Worth distinguishing between exhaust noise and engine noise- I had a Tubi exhaust on a Ferrari which sounded lovely under full throttle or over-run, but it became the dominating sound which was a shame as the engine made lots of lovely geary-whizzy sounds which were lost in the drone of the exhaust. It was very wearing on a long run too, esp if just cruising.
I have found that my aftermarket airbox (Fabspeed) makes a lovely sound, but you can still hear the other distinct sounds of the flat six. The sound is in the car where you can enjoy it rather than outside;
Living on a village road on a route favoured by local bikers, I am now more conscious than ever that not everyone is as thrilled with a loud exhaust note as the owner might be. I think that in these politically correct times we all need to do our bit to not annoy our neighbours else risk more encroachment of motoring liberty from the powers that be. Off my soapbox now...
