IMS Failure, question

Hi All

Having read lots of editorial about IMS failure on 996 and 7 cars, does anyone know what year 997 it is safe to buy to avoid this?

I haven't seen [although there is plenty more i could of read], any posts by owners with 06 997's with this or general wrecked engines, do i take it they finally cured it during the 997 run, or not??

Im hunting for an S, but am quite concerned if im honest

I am on my second 997 now. Previous one being an Oct 2004 C2S which was bought 2nd hand in 2006 and I drove that car for 4 years before switching into a 997.1TT.

Both cars ran without fail and passed all OPC inspections and nothing was ever mentioned about the dreadful IMS failure. In any case, it is well known and thus the remedies are documented as well. From my Porsche friends who also have driven the 996 and 997 I have not heard of any failures on their cars.

My advice would be to get a car that you like from OPC as they offer the extended 2-year used car warranty. That is all you need to sleep well and drive with surety that in the unlikely event everything will be covered. The IMS should not fail after the 2 years when the warranty runs out, or you can elect to extend it until the car is 10 years old.

I bought my 2007 997 C2S in July having researched this subject as I too was a concerned buyer
From my research (which was mainly forum's, dealers and owners) I found the latest year for IMS failures of the 997 was the 2006 models, however my research is in no way scientific and I'm still s**t scared of it happening to me
The first thing I did was to get a service, oil & filter change etc and I waited with the mechanic to personally check the oil filter for any sign or metal 'shards' that can be seen in the filter on cars that can have a problem
I know of a few dealers that in fact won't buy in 2006 997's because of the problem, yet they have said the 2005 and 2007+ models are OK......further confusion
I myself have owned a 986 and a 987 boxster and was always worried during my years of ownership but they were OK and I am now hoping to also be OK with my 997 (having seen the filter was OK)

Basically the options you have are:
Get it from an OPC so it has a warranty
Buy Privately and get your local OPC to stick a warranty on it (£2k)
Keep £12k in savings for a new engine just in case
Wing it and keep your fingers crossed

They are amazing cars and if like me you are lucky enough to drive it every day you'll be living the dream!
 
In Gary's 997 Warranty thread (PCGB members access only) there are 7 reported RMS failures ranging from 14-24k miles on the clock.

I don't know what models/years these are though. Perhaps you can ask him if he has that info.

It'll be a bit of a tainted answer being as you're in the 997 area [;)]
Turbo blocks up to the gen2 were based around the proven GT1 block and pretty much bullet proof.
The 996 Turbo is a bargain supercar and I know a few friends who have them, the Turbo torque is addictive...[8D]

The interior of the 997 is a sea change from the interior of the 996 and I feel the ride and handling were much improved, however it depends what you want from the car, if its about power then the 996 is the way to go and enjoy that boost, for divine looks both in and out with sublime handling then the 997 is the answer.... with the budget then the 997 ticks the boxes you didn't know you needed [;)]

Alex, we don't have a single recoreded IMS failure on the survey- but thats certainly not to say it doens't happen and not get reported.

Sorry; I assumed the OP meant RMS as I haven't personally heard of any major IMS issues with 997s.

OPC Don't admit its an issue.
And offer new no repair apart from a replacement engine.
They wont pull the bearing.

But the failures dwindle into next to nothing on these later models. Unlike 996 & 986 models
theres other modes of failure its just this one gets all the hype.
