Does the 997 also suffer from this bearing failiure ? just wondering as i am looking at 996's but the 997 may be affordable also, it would be a major push towards the 997 if they did not suffer this potential ££££££££££ [:(]

If your whole buying process is to be dominated by the potential for failure of the IMS, both 996 and 997 (only the early ones, I believe), which is a rare occurrence in any case, then it may be better for you to stay clear and look for a 996 turbo.[;)] I think the internet and forums have made this out to be a bigger problem than it really is. Given the number of 997s out there I can't recall the last thread on here with a reported IMS failure. Of course there are other issues too - like bore scoring etc....
If you trawl the forums I doubt you will find any make or model that doesn't have some kind of Achilles heel. All IMO - of course![:)]

You have to go to Gen 2 59 plates at the moment to get away from the IMs and Bore scoring problems, the 2006 models have an improved IMS bearing.

US class action has the failure rate at around 5% I believe.

Cars mainly go between 30 and 55k, the 996 3.4 and 997 3.6 have lower risks beware of rattling engines and the rear left exhaust being a different colour to the right one.

Gordon, Thanks for that something to look out for, I have been told by a couple of specialists that it is audible, is a 996 4S 3.6 ?

Yes - they have the same engine that let go for me in my 996.2 C4.

As above, the risks are small but if it happens to you it will break your heart!

By the time its audible its just about gone it would be smoking and sounds like a bag of bolts,

If you buy from the trade make sure you get a long warranty and that it covers IMS and bore scoring as a lot of them are avoiding as they are known faults.

The 997 C4 is 3.6 ltr and 345bhp where as the 997 C4S is 3.8 ltr and 385bhp

True for the Gen 2 cars, Peter, but the Gen 1s are 320 and 355 respectively - which is what I think James maybe looking at. Of course the 996 turbo, with no IMS issues, is 420 or 450 with the powerkit.[:)] 60 odd available on PH at the moment!
