Increasing the dashboard brightness

As we head into the darker months, I realised I hadn't got round to getting the pathetic lighting sorted out behind my dash. Does anyone know a) what the best replacement bulbs are b) how to easily remove the dashboard dials to get to the bulbs?

Thanks!

Dials just pull out - held in by friction.
LED replacements seem to be the favoured option. Not done it myself but others will chime in here I'm sure.

Buy LEDS from ebay, there are loads for sale there, you will need to have wedge bulb holders fitted to use them, time to get the soldering iron out if they are not already in there. Be aware that the rheostat that dims the lights will no longer work with the LEDS fitted.

Fantastic.. thanks for your help. I've just ordered some - and managed to resist the temptation for fancy colours!

Ash,
This is a modification I'm considering for the 911 and a couple of other cars. Can you keep the forum informed of your progress and thoughts on how effective the LED's are?

This would be a good subject for Porsche Post. The sort of simple but effective upgrade we could do with!

I fitted 993 wiper arms to my 3.2 which were better than the orginal 3.2 arms, can anyone confirm if 964 or 993 dashboard illumination is any better than that of the 3.2?

So following the Pelican thread which Rob pointed us to. It appears the best option may be simple replacement of the existing bulbs, prefferably with the same fixing but at a slightly higher wattage, for example 2.5 or 3 watt rather than the factory fitted 2 watts.

The best option isn't to replace the factory bulbs if you want better visibilty in the clocks, fit wedge connectors and LEDs, it's a proven remedy, I 've done it and so have plenty of other 911 owners.
