India Red

For years I thought my 1989 944 was guards red. Just checked the sticker in the boot to order a can of touch-up, and its LM3A.
This is India Red when I check the paint code.
Guards red is also LM3A but only upto 1983.
Are these the same colour?

No it's not the same - they are different by several shades!!!

I had an India Red 944 Auto with the LM3A paint code that some one had bodywork damage on and it had been sprayed in with Guards Red - it looked awful and was not even close - how it was allowed to go though and come out of reputable paint shop heaven only knows!!

Cost me good money to have it correctly sprayed in the correct colour which my very good local body shop correctly identified as India Red.

AFAIK India Red is known as Guards Red in the UK and USA only.
It's meaningless in other markets...

I believe Mark is right. I think the German name for Guards Red is, indeed, Indische Rot, (i.e. Indian Red). Paintscratch quote several colour codes for Guards Red - namely, [FONT=arial,helvetica"][FONT=arial,helvetica"]80K/G1/G8/25/027/LM3A and, I suspect the monumental reputation Guards Red has for fading may be to blame for poor colour matching.

Just my 2 cents.

I can also confirm that India Red LM3A is Guards Red since I have recently bought a touch-up stick from the OPC and walked in with the code in hand and asked for India Red and the guy looked at me strange and confirmed that it was the same as Guards Red.

In order for me (ChipsAway) to mix paint for repairs we use the Dupont colour scheme for automotive paint. Dupont call LM3A as Indischrot and when I stick this into my laptop it gives me four colour variations in the formula ranging from 1973 to 2005.

Most car manufacturers call their paints a totally different name to that used by the actual paint supplier, and also use totally different names throughout the world formarketing purposes [&:],this all adds to the fun for us car enthusiasts when we try to work out what colour our cars are.

I know that my two are black and blue [:D]

at least I think one of mine is blue

I think you'll find that VW 'Flash Red' is exactly the same as Guards Red, or at least on a multi hued vehicle like mine, so close as to be indistinguishable to the naked eye.I sprayed the light surround on mine with the VW colour and I can't see the difference.

When I went into OPC Silverstone a few weeks back, I got a touch up paint. I asked for Guards red, and got (what the guy described as) 911 India red. It matches fine. I'll check the code tomorrow.
