Hi all
Bit of advice needed please
my indicator stalk has stopped working in that it will not stay in the right turn position and will the left but not return.
I guessed replace the stalk then found you have to replace all of them. As they are in a sealed box
I have had a look on internet and found a diy video of replacement and looks quite straight forward so going to do the job and was wondering if any one else has done the job and is there any thing to watch out for when i do the job.
Also will airbag light stay on after removal and will i need to have it reset.
kind regards and merry christmas to all.

The stalks come in 4 basic flavours:

1) 2 lever stalk. The levers are integral to the central switching unit and cannot be removed individually

2) 3 lever stalk with OBC. This has the additional stalk for the OBC screwed onto the left side.

3) 3 lever stalk with cruise. This has the cruise lever on the right hand side, and the lever is integral to the to the central switching unit and cannot be rmoved.

4) 4-lever stalk. The same as 3) but with the OBC stalk screwed to the left side.

The 4-lever stalk is cheaper than the 3-lever, for some strange reason, so if you need a 3-lever, buy the 4-lever, and cut the cruise lever off. (Or retrofit cruise control perhaps if your car is eGas). Alternatively, buy a 2-lever stalk and swap the OBC lever over.

996 and 986 Boxster stalks are exactly the same, by the way.

Disconnect the battery before you start work (see the battery thread in the Technical Articles section to stop the alarm going off). Do not reconnect it until you have completed the job, otherwise you will get the airbag light, which has to be reset with a Porsche tester.

Thankyou Richsard
I to have done a bit of reserch into prices of said parts and spotted the four lever one was cheaper than the 3 one I required this seems crazy to me are porsche doing the less is more trick lol.
is it a simple job to buy the 2 stalk and use the old obc stalk is it just a case of unscrew from one and fit to the other will the 2 stalk have the parts required to make the obc work.
or is the four stalk one the best way to go at least the obc will work. dont fancy fitting cruise not a fan. so will it be ok to cut the arm off.
kind regards mick

The OBC stalk is completely detachable from the central swith unit, and has its own cable connection. If you can find a cheap 2-stalk, I would go with that. Try Porsche-Apart or eBay.

I have a couple of spare two lever switches in a box in the garage plus a spare cruise switch.

Richard is correct in that it is possible to swap the cruise and OBC switches from another unit. (It is also to swap these without removing the steering wheel).

I am in Munich for Xmas but you are welcome to one of my spare switch units on my return on the 28th.

Thanks very much Nick for the offer of the 2 stalk and will gladly take you up on the offer i will try to pm you but never done one before so if you dont get one post on here and i will try to get in touch.
kind regards mick
this is the sort of thing i like to see on forums its nice when we can help each other out. [:)][:)][:)]

PM received, I will dig it out when I return to the UK on the 28th and reply to your PM.

Sorry to Hijack,

Richard, Do you know if since my car doesn't have OBC stalk, Is it just a matter of adding it ,Or does Ecu also need to be programmed?.

Again sorry for the hijack.

and thanks in advance.

You have to add the stalk, connect it to the instrument cluster, and have the cluster coded, none of which is difficult.

Unforunately you cannot buy the OBC stalk by itself - only as part of a 3-lever stalk. If you don't want to buy a complete stalk unit, you can also do the OBC with a simple rocker switch.

Many thanks for the reply Richard.
I Didn't even consider not using the stalk and using a rocker instead.

Might do a Rocker at the side or under the steering colum. Thanks for the idea.

Hi all
Had a problem with my indicator stalk and when i found out the replacement price of £260.00 plus fitting. ouch

put a thread on here for some advice and help came with some great advice.
searched some sites for a how to and found a video instruction on you tube watched it a couple of times and decided i could do the job.
then through the forum came an offer of a 2 stalk one for free.
mine was a three
with some advice from the forum i was told the third stalk was removable.
i took up the offer of the 2 stalk and armed with my lap top and tools took to the job.
With the advice and help from this forum and the video demo i was able to carry out the job and must say all went smoothly and the job was actually quite easy to do.
SO REALLY JUST WANT TO SAY A MASSIVE THANKS TO NICK_USA AND RICHARD HAMMILTON FOR YOUR HELP
ON THIS ONE YOU HAVE SAVED ME A FORTUNE.
GREAT THIS FORUM LETS HELP EACH OTHER WHERE WE CAN
KIND REGARDS MICK

PS
I know these cars are high performance and things go wrong but i have a ford escort diesel with 189000 miles on the clock and that has never needed an indicator stalk replaced the porsche has done just over 60000 makes you think sometimes
