Indicator Stalks not 'Locking' - Now Fixed

I have a slightly annoying problem with the indicator stalks on my car. Sometimes they will not lock into position, if I hold the stalk in position the indicators operate as normal.
Since the car is up on stands with the wheels off I had a play with it today and what I discovered is...after the indicators are cancelled (by the movement of the steering wheel) the stalk will not lock back in the 'on' position until the wheel has been turned back through 90 degrees, from straight ahead, in the direction of indication, either before or whilst trying to indicate (does that make sense?). It is exactly the same in both directions.

I haven't taken anything to bits to look at the actual mechanism yet (since I suspect it will be a wheel off job).

Has anyone experienced anything like this or heard of it before? I have done a v quick search but not found anything relevant.
