Indicator switches - How much?!

Contrary to common perception so far I have not found OPC sourced Porsche parts to be particularly expensive (in fact pretty competitive) and certainly easily comparable to the equivalent part on my Ford Focus - apart from one exception (the resistor pack for the fan speed control). Until today that is. My indicator switch seems to have packed in. I seem to remember something about this on previous posts but a go on the search engine last night didn't bring anything up. Anyway I rang the OPC today and nearly spat my tea out when he quoted me £147+vat for a new indicator switch. Apparently It is all one unit along with the windscreen wiper switch.

What other issues have others had with indicator switches and what did they do to eventually fix it? My problem is that when I pull the stalk down or up I get one flash then nothing else. The switch operates fine mechanically - i.e. it stays up (or down) and cancels when I turn the wheel, but I only get one flash.

Cheers.

My stalk failed totally last year and I got a S/H one cheaply, but I had a similar problem to yours a few years ago and it was actually the indicator relay which had broken. A new one was much less than £147 (and easier to swap too)

Thanks Paul, will look at that first. This query alone has probably already saved me the cost of this years PCGB membership[;)]

Try the relay which Paul mentioned, if not i got a indicator stalk assembly for circa £30 from Mr Butterworth at Porsch-a-Part

Why buy from Buttercup when PH will do you a slightly dirtier one for a fraction of the price...?

Last few times I've been to PH they seem to be running very low on 944 parts and haven't been able to help me. I'd always give them a try though.

James, at "Only 9" is breaking a few 944's pretty sure he has a website if not let me know and i will get his contact number for you,i have saw a few on e-bay recently.

Paul's really lost interest, which is a shame.

Ouch! Don't like the sound of this...the wiper side of mine goes floppy from time to time. It's on the "to do list" but will of course get to the top of the list if/when it fails completely (when it's raining of course).

I've been putting it off until I fell like removing steering wheel and instrument panel to do something about the dim lights! Better start saving up my £147 + VAT, hadn't I?

I'm with you lot too!!!

My indicator switch doesn't stay in the up position (to indicate right) and I'm struggling to find a 2nd hand one. Mine also is the all-in-one jobbie with the brass pickup on the outside for the horn connection.
To be fair... £147 isn't that bad in my opinion, but still too much for me at the moment! [:D]

Well I suppose we should be thankful these parts are still available I suppose. I was reading an article about old Ferrari ownership the other day and for old Ferrari parts you have to have them specially made at ridiculous prices.

I had the same prob and the floppy wiper switch which somestimes rectifies itself. I have one from P and H and was £20 (about 3 months ago). I saw 2 there and picked one. I did have to rummage in some boxes upstairs though to find it. I have yet to fit the new one. MOT is looming so will fit it soon []

They are a Porsche specials/breakers (more of a breakers) based in Shardlow near Derby, just off J23 of the M1. They used to be a real gold mine for used parts but now through a combination of loosing interest in the Porsche specialist market (they've now diversified to MX5's) and fewer 944's being written off (which I suppose is a good thing) they are not as good as they used to be as a source of used parts. Also I get the feeling that they are loosing guys with knowledge and experience on the older cars as they are seeing more and more Boxsters and modern stuff and less and less of the older stuff. Still worth a try if you want any used parts though.

My stalks were "crunchy" and then failed.

Got a superb set of ebay for approx £30 from a 968. Lovely action, but I lost the headlamp wash function.

Decided this was important for some reason (even though I had never used it - lights are usually protected from crud), so bought a proper S2 set off ebay for another approx £30 - they had the wash function but were already "crunchy" and didn't self-cancel well.

I reverted back to the 968 stalks - having decided that indicators were actually more important to me.
