Induction noise?

I've just had my car looked at because of a low pitched droning/whistle noise that it makes at idle that I'm sure is something that has gradually appeared over the last year.
I thought it sounded like it came from the alternator but have been told that it is just an induction noise.
Does anyone else hear something like this at idle?

Sounds like I have a similar noise. I researched it and from what I could see also thought it was maybe the alternator bearings failing.

I asked my local speciailist to investigate at the last service and they could find nothing abnormal. They thought it would be highly irregular of the alternator bearings to wear / fail.

For some reason it doesnt seem quite so bad now....but it is still there.

Interesting that you've been told it may be the alternator bearings.
I've just had the alternator replaced because the bearings failed. That was a porsche alternator that was only fitted 3 years ago.
All of this made no difference to the noise. Just before the alternator was replaced I got a screeching noise on startup similar to fan belt slip.
