"Infamous heater clip"

Done a trawl on "heater" and came across the infamous heater clip.

My 86 lux heater has two settings - cold when fully turned left (as you'd expect) and hot when turned a smidge to the right. I appreciate this could be much worse - I'll be ok in summer, my windscreen defrosts beautifully on mornings like today (-9 degrees) and when its defrosted I get to open my sunroof which always brings a smile to my face... [:)]

Does this problem sound like the infamous heater clip or is it something else?

Oli - "glad" (you know what I mean) you've jad heater problems - if I dont fix it soon, it'll bo on the list for the 18th!

Mine was stuck on fully-hot. If the clip breaks it won't adjust at all, Porsche set it to default on hot so you can at least survive in winter.

Mine broke during the hot summer - remember it? - when my windows and sunroof were stuck shut as well. []

It's easy to see if the clip is broken if you take the glovebox out, make sure you take the fuse that controls the light out, though.

My 944S is the same since I've owned it, the clip on mine is missing, as is the rod it actuates and I've been waiting for a suitable parts car to steal bits from. I have to admit that in this weather the full heat option is rather nice all the time [:D]

When mine broke, and a certain south west OPC (not Exeter) diagnosed it as a failed control module - they didn't know anything about 944s in the dealer network even in 1996 - it would pretty much cycle hot and cold varying as much to do with road speed as anything.

I think it depends exactly where it has broken what symptoms you get. As Paul says it's easy to check, but pull the glove box light fuse before you take it out. I forget which one it is becaue I have done it so often it's a personal challenge to do it "live" without blowing the fuse and I got so good at that that I haven't popped it for years.

That's something I've never managed yet - blown a fuse every single time I've been in there.

Colin,

Interesting ... yes, My S2 doesn't have a healthy heater. I am sure that there is at least one broken bit in there, and possibly two. The control for adjusting the airflow to your feet doesn't work - is this a clip issue as well? Is it the same part, by any chance?

And I'm not sure whether the upper control works as it should either. Oh, and the knob that controls the fan speed is broken as well. There's 90-degrees of slack when you turn it (it's just the knob, nothing more serious ... I know 'cos I broke it [] )

We can certainly put such things on the list for the 18th. (Which reminds me, I never updated the thread about the 18th, as per your suggestion. Must do it now.)

I believe that's how it is designed - Paul mentioned it earlier. It's so that if you're driving round sub zero Germany when it happens, you won't freeze to death, whereas if it happens in Summer, you can open the sunroof, open the windows and slowly die of heat exhaustion. Can't you Paul[&:]
