info on a engine change

Hi

I have tried the search but come up with nothing concrete, here is the question (well actually 2)

I have a 944 (1986) but the engine droped its crankshaft seal over the weekend and is a little rattley now, so I am thinking of either rebuilding the existing engine, or putting in a larger replacement engine (ideally the 3.0 engine) whats required, what are the pitfalls, has anybody done it before, or should I stick to finding a 2.5 engine and try to upgrade this?

Can anybody point me to the information on this as I would not think I am the first to ask this question.

Also on the track of the car its a narrow version (not the later type) can this be changed so a early car has the latest offsets, or does this actually make no difference

thanks

John

Hi,

I'm in a similar position myself and considering an S2 engine. My only advice having spent a lot of money over the years having a 2.5 8v engine.... rebored, crank rebuild, head ported, chip, induction kit, exhaust - etc. is that although it ran alot better with a bit more poke it was not worth the money in terms of performance increase. Some of the work was necessary at the time to keep it going after a crank failure and timing belt failure, but if you're looking for more preformance then start with a different engine.

... how can you call it the 'scumball machine'?

its the scumball machine as thats what it was brought for (scumball.co.uk) a trip across europe to the ring in cars worth about £1000 but could not go on the ring due the the oil slick we were leaving behind us.

Ahem .... poke around on here ... he's a regular poster.

White ... started life as a lux, is now something significantly more than a lux ... had the 3.0 S2 engine bolted in along the way ...

Yes. That definitely sounds familiar.

Or maybe Paul?

Never mind, I'm sure he'll be along sometime soon. Nice chap tho, that Phil feller.

Dunno.

I think he buys quite a lot from Bert though.

(Sorry, should stop. I am in a profoundly silly mood today. The person you need to talk to is Peter, and he will be along shortly I am sure ... )

How can I live up to that introduction? [;)]

Good to hear there's some more potential nutcases out there :ROFLMAO:

If I'm honest, with the prices of S2 and Turbo's now so low I'm not sure how economicaly viable it is, but if like me you are attached to the car or have already done a lot of other work (brakes, suspension etc) then it could still be worthwhile, especially if you're doing all the work yourself.

I chose the S2 engine as 968 ones were an awful lot dearer for a relatively small increase in power, I was advised against the Turbo as the swap is apparently more complex (not completely convinced about this), but to be honest I prefer the response of most NA engines so this seemed the ideal for me anyway.

I had JZ Machtech do the transplant, so cannot be a huge help with the technicalities, but to do it properly was fairly involved.

There's another old thread here which might be of some help

The only other thing I'd add to above is that the oil cooling is a bit of an issue, the location of the cooler the S2 has no airflow to it on the Lux, we cut away the slot under the fog light to try to improve it, but it still wasn't ideal for track use (not that this is exactly an insurmountable problem).

The car gave me so much fun on road and track that I've enjoyed every second of it, and can't wait to get on with the next phase [:D]

Ahhh, Peter/Paul/Jim, good to see you!

To build on Mr Empson's excellent point, I have a good friend who lives by the addage that you should never build a car you can buy.

In my experience of engine swaps in Golfs, it certainly held true. It may apply here.
