Initiate Stop/Start?

Hi Guys,
What type of magic dust do I have to use to initiate the stop/start feature? I have pressed the button (light out) and driven the vehicle, sometimes it functions as it should and other times it doesn't.
I must be doing something incorrectly. One of my failings is doing things to order, just ask "She who must be obeyed". I have read the Magicians manual but it must be written in some form of code of which I am unfamiliar with.
Any help from you Master Sorcerers would be much appreciated, otherwise, its a trip out to my Porsche dealers. I thought it was idiot proof, just push the button as long as you are in morose drive mode, sorry standard mode (no go faster gizmo's being selected).

Problem resolved. Its turns out it is pilot error, wouldn't you bloody know it, I shall never hear the last of it from her indoors.

Of late I have only been doing short journeys and the engine temperature was not sufficient to activate the stop/start system. Just been for a longer run and its worked as it should.

All along I knew it was Porsche's fault they should have made the engine warm up quicker, anyways that's what I am telling you know who.

Regards

Ray

Keep the faith.

It explains that in my QQ handbook....

It's to do with emissions when engine not warmed up properly....

So you can tell the other half that the book is at fault.....:ROFLMAO:

Already done that but I don't know if she has accepted my answer?

If she reads this thread she'll throw the book at you!

As far as stop/start goes my first job on starting the car is to disable it and switch on the noisy exhaust, but at 63 I don't feel fully adult yet. [;)]

Paul,

I am a touch older but with a mental attitude of an 11 year old, so she says, luckily she does not use the computer.

I hate the stop/start function. The first thing I do when I start the car is press the disengage button. I know the manufacturers have done their homework but I believe long term, it wont do the car any good. From the day I started driving all the way back in 1987, I was told that the most strain on the engine/battery etc is when you start the car. I only wish there was a way to completely override it. I hate it!! Did I say I hate it!!!

As you say, press the button which either engages or disengages the stop/start function. I didn't think you had to press the button each time you start the vehicle, I may be wrong?

I am not a great one for reading instruction manuals.

Unfortunately this is exactly what has to be done.

When mine goes in for the service in January, I will ask if they can disable the function. I hate it too!!!

Peter,

You live and learn. I never tried pushing the button to disable then switching the engine off, then on start up noted the stop/start function.

I think it's one of the (legitimate) ways of claiming a given, if unrealistic level of fuel consumption. If the default setting isn't 'on', the consumption would increase on the urban cycle or whatever it's called (no Lycra involved [;)]).

The official emissions and mpg figures for petrol and diesel cars are just absolute tosh.

My 718 CS PDK is officially quoted as 38.4mpg combined. In my experience of over 7500 miles on rural, motorways, and urban routes the average consumption over the total mileage is, according to the PCM, 28.2 mpg.

Where I live traffic congestion is not a significant feature, except doing the tourist season, so stop/start is rarely active anyway. I choose to switch it off, as traffic light halts are usually of a short duration, except where road works are on-going on single carriageway roads where I switch off the engine manually anyway.

As Paul has stated, the manufacturers use auto stop/start as an artificial way to boost combined mpg figures. They obviously treat the car buying consumer as fools.

Is it any compensation that the buttons for the stop start and the sports exhaust are handily placed next to one another? One smooth action on start up before fighting with the electronic hand brake😕

I very rarely use the hand brake. If the car is left in "Sport" mode and restarted has the vehicle remained in "Sport" mode? If it has then the Stop/Start function will be deactivated. Sadly, I don't think it could be this easy to overcome?

I do not understand why the manufacturers do not let you in the car menu settings, enable you to decide if you want at start up. For the car to be stop start or not. This is perfectly possible and at the most just requires very very slight reconfiguring of the software. You can at the moment choose to be either MPH or KPH as the default measurement.

I really wonder why they do not listen to thier customers. It seems to me that we are mow always being controlled by orhers.

On my Cayman 718S i noticed that the auto stop start was cutting the engine out when I reached the end of my road i.e. Well before the engine was warmed up so not good news as you a restarting a cold engine again.I would have thought that it should not cut in until the engine has warmed up as it does on my BMW, has anyone else come across this on the Cayman 718 S?

I now switch off the auto stop start when I switch on the engine. I also noticed that it could be a bit slow witted to restart the engine which can be embarrassing at junctions/roundabouts so stopped using it.
