Injector Cleaner

Hi All

I want to clean my injectors - probably just with a cleaner added to the petrol. Would this "clean" the lines as well?
I did it like this 25 years ago!

Or, would it be better to get a set (I have a spare set) reconed and swap them.

Any ideas, reccomendations etc?

The car is running fine, it just something I'd like to do!

Mike

Or use Shell V Power for a few tankfuls to give the whole fuel system a good clean out. Best to replace your fuel filter if it's not already been done. These cars can be quite sensitive to clogged fuel filters.

A freind who works as a fuel system design engineer for Ford told me that fuel additives do nothing to your fuel system.
Send your injectors off for a good clean ultra-sonically.

Getting my injectors cleaned is on my "to-do" list as well, I even have that site Big Dave mentioned in my favourites ready and waiting.... I've never thought that injector cleaning stuff was such a good idea, the only place the stuff that is clogging up the injector can go is into the cylinder! And mine have taken enough of a hammering as it is [:D]

I use STP injector cleaner and it definately makes my car idle better and run smoother, I admit it's not a patch on having the injectors cleaned properly, but for a quick and simple thing to try I find it well worthwhile.

Thanks all.

Another question on the same lines are the 1986 and 1983 injectors the same - both 2.5 N/A engines?

Wondering if my "spare" set are the same as the ones performing ok at present.

Mike

I found carburettor cleaner somewhat addictive in my yoof, I ended up giving the car a squirt almost every week...[:)]

You can buy a small ultrasonic cleaner from Maplins for about £25. Perfect for injectors and all sorts of other things. Do it yourself....

I have this one:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=223108

but cheaper ones are available.

No, I never thought to do that. I don't suppose that would be difficult to do but I didn't.

This is getting more interesting I ll be calling in at maplins for a look at least - cant resist a toy and I have some spares to practice on!

Mike: I agree with Peter in principle...my car had a slightly lumpy tickover when I first had it, but a few tankfuls with Redex Injector Cleaner added have improved things, so on the basis of "if it ain't bust don't fix it" I'd say an additive is worth a try. I've met several owners who've done the same.

I've done this ever since having a Vectra that wouldn't idle, dying at junctions & roundabouts...Dealer wanted £85 fo replacing some mixing valve or other, but the local Vauxhall tuning specialist (VauxShop) kept a book at the time listing things like this that were simple, no fuss fixes. Bingo! A £5 bottle of Redex is better than £85 on unnecessary work......

Only thing is if you send them of you know the job is done right .
You also get a before + after reading of flow rates.. So you know they are better...Can you do that with your maplins version.????? I think not....
Personally its a VERY good £50 well spent.

Mike, I have a few bottles of Millers Oils "Injecta Plus", I swear by it.

You're not far from me so if you want a bottle just pop round.
We have a very friendly Millers Oils depot in Leicester and EMC recommened their oils too so it's a win-win situation [:D]

Hi Paz
Think I'll take you up on that - it was my original intention!
Give me a call - No below- Id like a look at your 'sport' in the dry too!
Mike

ORIGINAL: xenon

Sorry for suggesting it.

I think it's a great idea, and a good tool to have to clean other parts as well - I'll be doing the throttlebody if it'll fit in!

I'm going to look into what would be needed to set up a pulsing signal for the injectors while they're in the bath and how much effort would be needed to do the flow and spray pattern tests as well.

If I was only ever going to clean one set of injectors then I'd say send them off, but I can use this over and over so the saving will be worthwhile.

It's fun to have a go at these things and I'd rather learn by doing it myself than paying someone else to do it [:D]

And there is all sorts of stuff you can clean in it using a non-aggressive detergent. Jewellery comes up well and anything else intricate.
