Inside door handle gone floppy

You may laugh but this is a very serious problem for some people, luckily it has not reached a critical point for me yet. The problem is when I tugged the inside door handle to open the door to get out it made a bit of clunking noise and now a bit floppy and does not sit flush back into the recess in the door.

The inside handle still opens the door fine, for now, but is obviously not all fine. Anyone had a similar problem? Also has anyone tried taking off the door cards? Just a bit worried about setting off the airbags if I do it to investigate what has come loose on the opening mechanism.
