I have found a993 near London and want an inspection and hpi check done . any info regarding Peter Morgan, or Mark @sportscarguides to do the job on my behalf cheers

Hi,

Mark at Sportscarguides arranged my inspection, and it was a very thorough job - Report, cd with photo's etc- he actually has agents all around the country, so I cannot guarentee it would be the same person, but he provided me with a good service. - http://www.sportscarguides.com/pre_purchase.html

Peter Morgan has a very good reputation, but used only to cover a limited area, but I have seen him advertising for other people to do inspections on his behalf - info is at http://www.petermorgan.org.uk/inspection.htm

Hope it goes well

Pete

Peter Morgan did my inspection near Reading a couple of years ago. Very thorough and I would have no hesitation in recommending him.

Get it done by a Porsche specialist mechanic if you can, who can get it up on a proper car lift & who has all the tools to hand in their workshop. They work on these cars themselves every day.

Lots of contacts in the back of Porsche Post, 911 & Porsche World Magazine etc. (or search the forums)

Hi,

I had a medium feedback - don't know the exact details - but there was an issue with what space /driveway etc. was available to inspect the car on - and Morgan didn't come out glowing with recomendations - but don't know all the facts . . . .

I'd second/3rd .. the advice above[:)] and get an independant specialist to inspect the car, and look for soemone who will give you a balanced interpretation of the condition - i.e what needs doing ( not a cold list of each and evry screw/nut,plastic lug that is missing ), what would probably need doing in any model of that age, and...approx. what the garage wil chareg to deal with the faults.

Homework[8|]?
Huge amount of buyers info available on line - here, and on other websites.
Might pay to ask about any of the know faults ( e.g. door check stays, wishbone bushes ) - before then committing to the Full Inspection?

perhaps a tenuous link,
but I always get the inspection to do an MOT as well -

There's a large part of the MOT checks that they'd do as an inspection
so you get a fresh MOT into the bargain.

Also possible a bit extra haggle factor if it fails, as the MOT recommendation/ fail sheet can be a good negotiation pijnt - provided you are not too daunted by any of the problems?[:-][][:-]

In the poker playing antics of car buying - I suppose you could argue that if the dealer knows you have spent c. £200 on an inspection, then provided the car is generally good - he's got you over a barrel - as you wouldn't want to have to go and spend another £200 on the next car??

Good luck

Negotiate first and agree a price, then say you are happy providing the inspection (which you had not yet mentioned) lives up to what the dealer's been claiming, get the inspection and start haggling again.

I used Peter Morgan last year when I bought my C4S.

While I found his report to be very thorough it didn't give me - a 993 novice - a good idea of what work needed to be done.

6 month and £4,000 later I wish I'd had a specialist to look at it first to make me aware of what I would need to do.

Good point CaptainMark. The report I got from Peter Morgan was more a purchase valuation rather than an engineers assesment.

But having said that, even a workshop might not tell you everything you need to know. After buying my C2 I booked it into the local OPC for a major service and checkover. They came back to me with a whole list of things that needed doing. But I wasn't confident that they knew what they were talking about. They just seemed to be listing things which are known to be 993 problems (Wishbones etc).

So I just paid for the service and took it straight to JZM. Who said everything the OPC had spotted was actually fine. But instead they had a different list. All of which I had done, because I was more convinced they knew what they were talking about. For example new distributer caps and rotor arms - which they showed me were completely worn - and which the OPC had failed to spot.

Anyway,to get back to the point, I think the real value of the Peter Morgan inspection is that he goes over the whole car, and all the paperwork and will pick up on nything major that should put you off the car. And he's done so many that he definitely knows what he's looking for.

I was so confident in his verdict that I never even saw my car before I bought it.
