Installing new silencers...

OK - have decided to buy some RSR 'mufflers' from carnewal. Looks on p-car and other places and it looks pretty straight-forward to change them over but, as I am not exactly a mechanic, would be interested in stories of muffler change - especially any 'gotchas'! The one I have seen so far is heat shields being a pile of rust when you take them out...so may be best to buy a new pair...anything else?

you will also need new bolts for tailpipes and bolts for where the exhausts join the rest of system. I found that my exhaust straps were thin (on top, where you cant see). As a minimum get the bolts for the strap to be safe. Good luck!
 
It's relatively straightforward. I did mine in the driveway with a trolley jack and some axle stands. Assume your heatshields are toast, also, buy all replacement nuts and bolts. Use a dremel tool or similar to cut through the old bolts otherwise you will spend ages trying to undo them.

Well, I've gotta say the best way to do it is book a ferry, get yourself and your motor over to Carnewal and get Gert to fit them for you. Even with the travel costs it sort of works out about the same as having it all shipped, but its a damn fine day out if you can find the time. And the new noise on the way home.... sublime.

I'll second that. I used a little Black & Decker mini-tool to cut through the rust bolts. Saved me loads of time. Put lots of Coppaslip on the threads when you reassemble your nice new stainless bolts & nuts. Make sure you align the tail pipes properly - stand back & check.

And finally...wear some goggles. I've removed many particles of embedded rust from peoples' eyes in the past when I was a casualty doc. You'd be surprised how easily it happens.

I have to say, I have been talking to Gert over email at Carnewal and it sounds like a great option....may go for a high flow cat at the same time....

tunnel is £45 return in September so looks like a fun day and saves me losing more knuckle skin!

Once again - many thanks for the advice - if anyone has altered the cat was it worth it?

Recently I changed old cat for a 100 cells CAT. 1st thing that hits me is that the torque flat spot at 2500-3000 with my LPMM's had disappeared. Might be due to 100 cell or the new Oxygen sensor, but does a much better job than the old cat/sensor.

I cannot comment otherwise: I did not have the car for 2 months during minor accident repair so had almost forgotten the old feeling.
