Instrument Cluster

My 997 C2 Tip has developed an intermittent problem with the temperature gauge. When driving a short distance from cold the warning light flashes.

If the car is restarted this cures the problem. My local Porsche Centre have changed the senor but this has not cured the problem. They now say it needs a new Instrument Cluster.

I'm reluctant to buy a new one as my car is a 2005 with 127k miles on the clock.

Does anyone know what the problem could be or alternatively where I could get a reconditioned instrument cluster?

Regards

Some thoughts before taking the back off of the set, so to speak:

1. Does the gauge rise above 80 degC at the time this light flashes? I.e. Is thermostat working correctly? Could it be overheating very briefly as a sticky thermostat initially fails to open? (restarting the car 'cures' it because it's now open)
2. Is the gauge is still rising to 'normal' when the light flashes? Suggesting more of an electrical/logic fault?
3. Does the gauge falter/jump at all? (suggesting a poor connection, which might trip the logic on the warning light?)

Thanks for your reply.

The temperature gauge starts normally, rises to about 60 degrees then there is a beep and flashes the overheating warning light. If the car is restarted the gauge operates without any problem.

Would this be more the electrical fault? Sensor was replaced but has made no difference.

I believe the two instances which (normally) bring on the light are low coolant level and over temperature. I don't know where the temperature sensor is located but I presume on the engine side of the thermostat. Therefore if it was sticking the temp would rise above 80C before it opened and would be visible as such? Have they looked at the coolant level sensor?
