Insurance as second car?

Hi all

Yet another insurance question I'm afraid! I will read the insurance thread and contact them all, but I'm hoping someone can save me a bit of time.

Just renewing my 944 insurance for the 6th time. However, this will be the first time the 944 is my second car rather than my only car. Can anyone recommend which of the usual insurers is better for a proper second car classic policy for a 944? So far I've tried RH classic and Locktons. Any others worth a try? Lancaster? I'm currently insured with Adrian Flux, but not on a classic policy. Oh, and my 944 is kept on the driveway, mileage <5000 if that makes a difference...

Many thanks for any pointers.

Thanks Andy

I tried Admiral multi car previously and they came in very expensive. (IIRC higher than two individual policies with them!) Also, should have mentioned, it's only the 944 insurance that is expiring - my everyday car isn't due a renewal until July 2014, so a multi car policy wouldn't work for me right now...

Damn good price though...

Admiral Multi- car

Would Admiral cover things like agreed value? I hate 944s being insured on "normal" policies, as even a small knock is a write-off.

Try Classicline. Most classic policies want the car garaged, but they've always accepted mine on a driveway.

Has anybody else tried Locktons (the current club sponsor?)

(Mind you they couldn't quote for as it only seems to work with them if your primary car is a normal car ie not a Porsche and your Porsche is only a weekend car. They didn't like it when we tried to get a quote and our 1st, 2nd and 3rd cars are all Porsche's).

Cheers chaps. I've tried ClassicLine as well.

RH classic quoted £210, which is only slightly less than I paid for the 944 on its own as a normal car! We'll see if any of the others can do better...

Out of interest, how do insurers determine whether it's a second car or not?

I own another car but it is registered in my other half's name, and registration is not proof of ownership, so will this satisfy a classic policy - where most stipulate it must be a second car?

They just asked me what my other car was, and I told them!

I guess if you have a crash they might then check...? Or at least, not give you a hire car as you've got another car to use!

Dearest quote I had - £265 fell off my chair, in the last 6 years the most I have paid is £128 and the last 3 have been under £100

Hi Giles,

Admiral Multi- car

Garaged, 5k a year miles £96.00

Sorry! Got that wrong

The 44 is with A-plan, Garaged, 5k a year miles, Guaranteed value, Cherished salvage £96.00

Admiral wouldn't insure due to modifications

I am with Locktons for both Porsches. Came in cheaper as the 911 got a good quote.

Tried with the golf and still laughing.

Try Hegarty, I really liked them and good value.

Thanks chaps.

Locktons came back most expensive so far - not horrific (a pound more than Andy's quote!), but still more than I was paying for it as an only car. Will try a few others, but am getting quotes under £200 now. Not garaging it seems to push prices up, unsurprisingly.

How old are you Sandspider?

FWIW I am paying around £270 Fully Comp on my 951. Even for other classics like the Stag I pay around £100 a year.

Just about to enter my early 30s.

Best quote so far is now £119, from A-plan. Comprehensive, 5,000 miles, kept on drive. Just checking some of the small print...

Flux have got me for a year on mine ...

5k mileage annually, parked ON THE ROAD ... Fully comp £120

Can't argue with that ...
