Insurance for Boxster plus 2nd car?

Couldn't face selling the Boxster so decided to buy another practical car ('97 merc estate) for those days when I need more seats, luggage space etc.
I've been told you can only use ncd on one car so my insurers are quoting almost the same money to insure this car as the Boxster which is just too much! Anyone else had similar problems with insurance on a second car? Was hoping I could find one policy to cover both. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

This is correct.

Some brokers give substantial discounts for insuring more than one vehicle with them.

I have two cars insured via Adrain Flux.

Car dealers get a policy that covers several cars but I've no idea of the cost. It's bound to be based on the value of what's being insured.

JCB..

Thanks John. Will try some brokers on mon then, starting with Flux and see how I get on.

I have all my cars on one policy with Footman James and have had a good service from them for over ten years. I am embarrassed to tell you that the total cost for my lot is less than £2000 p.a. I am in my fifties, live in the Cotswolds and some of the cars are garaged, and I have made claims. Call 0121 561 4196 and ask for Jayne Jordan.

You can always get the other car insured under your partner's name or another regular user (if possible) and get your name down as a named driver. There are a lot of companies that offer very good introductory bonus for those who have driven cars but never had any NCB as the insurance has always been under someone else's policy. In this way that person can also build up their own NCB too.

DirectLine has started giving separate NCB for individual cars insured, I am sure a lot more insurers will follow...

Try A. Manning in Henley (see PP). I have both cars with them for £1400 with duplicated max NCB. I'm aged 32, both cars garaged, unrestricted mileage and track day cover (which I never use).

Thought about this and a nice way round it but unfortunately my partner is living / working in Japan at the moment so I've no chance! Might be worth trying next year though.

Thanks for the recommendations will let you all know how I get on tomorrow. Hoping to get both for less than 1500. Its complicated by the fact that the policy on the boxster does not expire until mid May and I'd like to pick up the other car this week....

Identical issue as I need a Landy for carting around Scuba gear, garden stuff etc etc, so ended up insuring both vehicles with First Alternative and got what I consider to be a reasonable quote £1k for both Boxster S and Landy. All the ncd went against the 987 as that was where the greatest saving was to be made. Really had to shop around though, and found that it was nigh on impossible to complete this type of arrangement by on-line means. However, it was interesting to compare the difference in quotes bewteen the insurance company's telesales people and then going on-line and generating an identical quote.

As always, shop around......Jon

Sorry, this came out all wrong; it should have said: They offer individual NCB for named drivers insured on the same car. Doh! Which doesn't apply to you but just in case anyone else needs to know...

Only managed to get as far as Adrian Flux today as busy at work but the guy I spoke to in the 'yellow team' (apparently they deal with all the high performance stuff) was trying hard to help. Came up with a quote just under 800 for the C230 and 850 for the boxster S (if renewal was now). Not too bad but boy do I regret hitting someone (gently) in traffic last yr which resulted in a big claim for the Boxster, the first in 18 yrs of driving! Apparently that had a huge impact on the quotes coming up. Still I'm not sure I'll beat that price....

This my 1st post on this forum so Hi all. Just going through the same problem, had a TT, was looking for a 2nd car for when the Cayman arrives, well I've got a diesel Vectra which considering I'm moving house and it's got a towbar will be perfect. Admiral do a multicar policy, the TT and Cayman will get all the NCB and I get a wee discount for insuring the cars with Admiral. I did check for comparitive quotes on separate policies and Admiral were about £40 cheaper for the Vectra. I'm pretty sure most large insurers will do something similar.

Welcome to the Forum and thanks for the suggestion. Have had previous cars insured by Admiral but not the Boxster. Didn't think the 'big' insurers did policies for more than one car but looks like they're worth trying then.

Word of warning - Admiral and most of their competitors are not good for insuring your high spec luxury/sports cars. They don't cover the optional extras, which could leave you with a large bill. Imagine writing off your Boxster with 6 or 7 thousand worth of optional extras - they'll only cover the cost of the bog-standard car with metallic paint. They'll also charge you extra for having the options but still won't cover them, so I guarantee you if you give them all the details their small print requires, they won;t be any cheaper than the better insurers.
Anyway, I've got my Boxster insured with the RAC, along with my Saab 9-5 3.0TiD estate, all for just over the £1000 mark. They're both in my name but the RAC applied my biggest NCD to both. They go to about 20 underwriters to get the most suitable deal for each car, so each is insured with a different underwriter. However, the RAC themselves are able to apply flexibility with regards the NCD and they confirmed that they'll cover all optional extras. I'd recommend giving them a call.

Read the RAC recommendation a bit too late but thanks anyway.

You may be right about the optional extras but I would have to question how much value they still hold on my Boxster at coming up to 5yrs old? Don't think there would be that much in it. Did try Admiral as they have a new policy where you can insure more than one car, but they were v expensive actually - 1200 for the boxster and 700 for the old mercedes. I pay quite a bit less than that for the Boxster at the moment with Liverpool Victoria.

In the end went with a broker called quotelinedirect with a policy from Royal & Sun Alliance because they could 'mirror' my full ncd from the Boxster for the second car which made it 550. Almost 200 less than anyone else with all the usual extras so it was time well spent. Have to see what they quote for the Boxster when that comes around for renewal..

Hi, I've used quotelinedirect for a few insurances - house and travel, and found them to be very competitive - forgot about them for the car though []

Having purchased two totally impractical cars, a Cayman S for long distance/PCGB stuff and a new Morgan Plus 4 for soft top Cotswold motoring, I personally think I needed a 'runabout'. I don't really want to leave my lovely Cayman in Swindon at night and the Morgan is, well let me put it politely, not that good for shopping! Plus the fact that it leaks rather!

So we have a problem: more expense. However, I did the calculations on running an additional car (new yellow Ford Ka) as a hack and to my amazement found that I save £2 every day. In short it is cheaper to run a Porsche and a Ford Ka than just the Porsche. I obviously took into account ALL financial factors, including depreciation, tax, fuel, insurance, service and loss of interest on my purchase price. Incidently, I got the new Ka for £5250 otr.

Obviously this will only work if the first car is expensive and you can finance the second car cheaply. Incidently I went for a new Ford as they are CHEAP to buy and cheap to run. A secondhand car would actually be more expensive in the long run.

Read this thread with interest since I have just decided to do the same thing - purchase second car to keep the local mileage off the Boxster - and yes, the previous post is right - it works out cheaper than using the favourite as one's only transport. Being an 'oldie' I insure through Saga - less than £500 for the Box and was pleasantly surprised to get a quote for £196 for the new car (Suzuki Swift GLX) - includes full no claims, and they reduced my Box insurance by £50 because of the less miles I will be doing on it !

Hi

I have my second car (964) insured on a classic car policy that works out very well. Main car has all the NCB and is insured with someone else.

Classic car policies usualy require - car to be a second car, limited miles (1000-10000), no NCB required and no NCB accrued while insured under such a policy. There used to be a rule that the car had to be 10 yrs old but most insurers run what they call a "future classics" policy which is what I used to insure my Boxster S under. Quotes are very good - try someone like Classic Line, Auto Torque/Capital Insurance, A Manning etc.
