Insurance Renewals

Both cars were due for renewal this month so had been doing the trawl through the internet to get quotes after the ridiculous hikes for both cars.

993 had jumped from £550 to £875 with Liverpool Victoria
MG ZTT had gone from £400 to £560 with Direct Line.

Have now placed the 993 with Direct Line at £404 and the ZTT with Privilege at £286. Both policies are fully comp and have protected NCB. If I did not want a protected NCB I could have got the ZTT at £214 with Swiftcover.

The annoying thing is that Privilege is a Direct Line company and they have come up with a premium 50% less than the parent company and the fact that Direct Line have quoted me £371 less for the 993 than the ZTT defies logic.
I suppose the message here is that you should renew online and not speak to any of the spotty oiks who man the phones and are trying to hit sales targets[]

Impeccable timing William. My policy with London Victoria is due for renewal at the end of this month and so I am expecting a similar hike. I take it from your comments that you arranged your directline insurance on line rather than over the telephone. Please confirm. Many thanks. Tim

Glad I could be of help[:D] Both policies were arranged online.

I even went back in and did the ZTT online with DL and it was around £310, yet when I spoke to DL they said that the £560 was the best they could do due to rate rises. Got the same story from Liverpool Victoria.

Would seem that insurers are looking for new customers in the hope that laziness takes over at renewal time and they stay

Thanks again William. Liverpool Victoria require approx £1,000 (50% increase on last year) while Directline appear to be about half that. Directline it is then!

Just in case it's of any use, I found Adrian Flux to be very good. I had the usual price hike from my previous insurer, but managed to get a vastly reduced quote with a saving of about £600.00. I don't have any trackday cover though, (doh!!) and the stand alone quotes I've received for this seem huge!

I used a few Independent Brokers for prices and got several different prices from each but all through the same company, NU!

So needless to say, I went direct to the company and they quoted me a cheaper price than the lot. Good Old Norwich Union! It does help having Home/contents and other cars insured there too.

D'OH[&:] I've just renewed mine with Tesco for £750. Wish I'd shopped around now. £750 used to be quite competitive - looks like premiums are falling a bit now ?? (at long last)

Here's another little trick for when you get your quotes which sometimes works if you are an "only driver" - ask them also to quote for putting either your partner, wife, sister or mum on too. Subject to their age and driving record, this can lower the premium.

wow i am stunned at the prices you lot are getting

you all living out in the sticks and over 50!?!! [8D]

In march this year i spent 10hrs going through about 50 insurance companies and cheapest i got fully comp was £1220, although living in london, driver 34yrs and with 9 yrs ncb! Only 1st year owning porsche though.

Shirish,

Luckily have max NCB for both policies. Had to initially take the financial hit on the other car just to build up the NCB over the years.

You really have to question the value of independent brokers if you have an internet connection and a hour to spare.

Targawoman,

The one thing I did not like about Confused.com is that there are some of the major insurers will not provide a quote.

Fair point - the site is by no means all-encompassing but it's a good start and we ended up saving substantially on two cars plus home insurance.

On second thoughts -- maybe those guys have a reason why they opt out (as in they can't match the other insurers' quotes anyway??)

TW,

If you look at the top of the thread, I placed my car with Direct Line as they were the cheapest but they did not come up on Confused.com. It could just be that as they tout themselves as direct insurers they do not want to have a referal from somewhere else.

You are right about it being a good place to start[:)]

Glad you (and others on this thread) got a good deal with Directline. We used to be insured with them but when our stuff came up for renewal we suddenly got mindboggling quotes and switched but that doesn't mean I wouldn't check their quotes again next time ours is due for renewal.

If you don't have an NCB try this.
I just added a 993 to the garage and didn't have a spare NCB to set up ( since running 3 other cars). Adrian Flux quoted £560 odd on a standard policy assuming I had an NCB but then when I asked if they had anything cheaper such as a limited mileage classic policy they eventually said "yes" and it came in at only £540 odd. And you don't need an NCB.

And (with respect to all female users of this site esp Laura who seems to know more about oil changes than all the blokes together) I agree that if you put a girlfriend or partner on the insurance it seems to come down.

HI I WENT TO A MANNING 993 C2 97 UP TO 3K YEAR £387
I WAS WITH FOOTMAN JAMES THEY WERE AFTER £495
AFTER A FEW DIFFERENT QUOTES OF 506 & 509 A MANNING WON ME HANDS DOWN

I've just renewed with Admiral having been faced with a price rise of £300 with Liv&Vic. Now paying £660 for full comp, protected, business class 1 use for my wife and I. One thing really annoyed me though. Having gone through the quote process and answered 'no' to accidents/claims in the last 3 years, they pointed out an accident nearly 3 years ago that came up on their database. I had quite inocently forgotten about it. It was a low speed bump into the back of my wife's car, everything was settled by that at fault driver and I didn't even think it had touched [my wife's] insurance. Well, Admiral loaded the quote by another £80!! How can someone elses poor driving make me a higher risk?!
