Insurance write-off prospects?

There's a Turbo 2 being advertised at the moment as a cat D un-economic repair write-off. It needs a new nearside rear wheel arch, or time from a skilled panel beater, plus a rear half respray and a set of wheels.

How much should someone be looking to save over the cost of a decent average Turbo 2 from a private seller or dealer, of say, £25-26k, to make such a purchase worthwhile, assuming that such a repaired car will never be worth as much as an undamaged example...... £5k? £7k? £8k?

Is ot a RHD or LHD, mileage colour etc so we can give us an idea of its value repaired and then we can work backwards. Im presuming its a 3.3 from the £26k with that mileage about 60/70k so with cat D trade are unlikely to touch it, so it would be worth about £20k repaired but you need to keep pictures of before and after which may help re sale value.

Hi Gordon, sorry, my fault for missing off the details:

1991 3.3
UK RHD
67k
silver bodywork
black seats and interior

All 4 wheels curbed to varying degrees (doesn't look like accident damage, more clumsy parking), nearside rear wheel heavily curbed as you would expect and wheelarch crumpled.

Alignment looks good; if the suspension arms were damaged then they must have been repaired.

Car is cat-D registered, but has not been subject to a VIC check and the logbook is still with the car (car is currently in-use), so the write off must have been for economic reasons, not mechanical.

The accident was described to me as the car having driven down the side of a concrete bollard on the motorway - which would explain why only the rear arch and slight marks on the front bumper and door are showing.

Gonna give this a miss - would take too much money to get it into the condition I want; taking it to the level of non-damaged cars.

Martyn, I take it that this is your old car? I did a bit of digging in the forum after you replied and the damage is the same as you described in your accident.

Could well be. It was also Polar Silver - Careless parking must have been after it was in my care - All 4 wheels were unmarked.

I had a letter from the DVLA so I knew it was back on the road.

It doesn't look like it's been cared for particulary well in the last year or so - it really needs a clean and all the wheels are well curbed. Interior was grubby as well.

Exterior paint code on this one is L999. Looks like it has just been run as-is for the past 6 months or so.

Sound of weeping coming from the corner.

It was fairly close to concours 13 months ago.

I put the new clutch in - 60 miles before the accident

That really is a shame. It's not a dog by any means, but I rekcon it would take a good £5k to get the bodywork, paint and interior back up to the kind of level you had it. Wheels spoil the car and could do with replacing or at the very least refurbing. And of course that all adds up to pretty much what the mid range straight rhd cars are going for, plus a cat-D mark of course :(

I couldn't comment on the mechanical condition of the car as it stands, as I decided to pull out before getting and inspection done. The only thing I can tell you is that it started straight away, with a few seconds bit of fanbelt whine, and looked pretty dry underneath.

Notice the kink in the rear quarter just below the window, it may be more badly damaged than anticipated and should be jigged to check it out.

I was coming through the roadworks on the M25 at J13.

I had just got onto the juction exit - Lots of cones - Round the corner and hit a 7kg lump of concrete, which broke the steering and suspension.

No steering, no hard shoulder = Collision with armco. Sliding along it hence the damage to the rear wing.

All this at 40mph - Mainly due to speed camera.

Scary.
Just as well you were going slow.
So the front of the car is also damaged then...

When I looked at the car it had scuffing to the front left hand corner of the bumper, slight scraping along the front arch and to the front edge of the door (including a 50 pence piece sized dent where something had scraped along and then dented the door).
