Hi

I'm moving to London in the fall, and I am thinking about buying a Porsche 911 996 around 2000 model. I have been trying to reach various insurance agencies, but they refuse to give me an aprox quote since I don't have the numberplates for the car and so on. Do you have any idea what I will have to pay for insurance?

Thanks

U may have to get tracker fitted , especially in central London Area, they will want to know where its to be parked on/off road/garaged etc but should make u a quote on chassis number ,try Aon 01252 767 188.......if ur a reasonable age, car value abt £35k ,LHD straight 996,no serious crimes i wud guess anything between £500 and £1000 ......too many variables to close up the price

It will be parked in a garage, I have no former crimes on my record, I have never had an accident and I got my lisence in juli 2004. Car value will be aprox £24 000. The only problem will be the age. I am moving to London as a student, and I won't be older than 20. Is this usually a big problem for insurance? I suppose I might have to register the car on my dad if I want a insurance, and register me as a second driver.

I think for ur age double the amount and student wont help .............u might as well rob a bank to cover it crimes will be small by comparison !
Seriously u have a problem i wud say £2500 minimum,sorry!
I can only just remember being in my 20 s and insurance was difficult then ............

Ouch.. that's bad. Currently I'm paying aprox 1 300 annually for my MINI Cooper S, and thats for 8 000 km per year. I'm leaving for London this weekend, do you know of any insurance agencys I could visit and talk with?

Unlike Vic, I can still remember my 20s quite vividly! [;)] Seriously Fredrik, if you manage to get insurance at all, please let us know as I'm sure there are others who might be interested. I paid £2500 for insurance on a Golf GTI when I returned to the UK and had no recent driving record in the UK (prior to my return I was overseas for 8 years). And I was 25 at the time with a clean history to boot. As with anything, things can be had for a price... whether an insurance company will cover you and a 996 at your current age for anything less than £5k will be quite surprising. [:(] Your best bet will be to get on your dad's policy as a named driver.

Cheers -

Hi Fredrik,
You must be doing something right to get a 996 at 20!

Anyway, just go onto websites like confused.com and the likes and fill in your details (you don't need the car reg, just make and model does it) and you will get a rough idea:

I got some quotes with the details you have posted so far from confused.com (used a dummy name of course and used the Post Code of one of the allegedly most secured place in London, yes, 10 Downing Street, garaged) and here are your quotes:

Thank you for all your help.

I am selling my MINI (which I bought for my inheritance after my grandfather) and have worked for a year now to pay for the 996. *A MINI Cooper S costs about £29 000 new in Norway* So it will be more or less an exchange for me.

As I am from abroad, and my parents live in Norway, can I still register the car on my dad?

Hi Fredrick,

Just for reference, I'm 27, have been driving for 10 years, but mostly in Australia (where I have a 5 year no claims bonus). I eventually got insurance for my 996 C2 (value say £26k, kept in a secure garage in central London) with Norwich Union, but at an annual premium of £2600... and it was a real struggle to get anyone to insure me. Without a UK driving history, most insurers don't seem very interested in drivers in their 20's with a 911...

Cheers

Hi Fredrik,
Don't want to discourage you but don't buy a 996 because it is now the same price as your Mini S as the repairs, service parts, running costs, insurance (as you have seen), tyres, etc will still be of a £60,000 car; yes , you do reduce the cost by using indis rather than Porsche Centres but do a thorough research into ownership rather than a old/new, buying/selling price comparison.

I live in London, no garage and just swithced to Aon via the Porsche club scheme. The reduction in premium was around 35% from my ist year premium last year. No trackday cover though. Give them a call. There will be an advert somewhere around here or in Porsche Post.

I am with Adrian Flux, they were the cheapest for me. Mine is not garaged and I live in Bracknell so it might be a bit different. Also they do not cover trackdays. Their webpage is www.adrianflux.co.uk/.

The trick is to get the car onto a "classic" policy - car only needs to be 10 years old. My 964 RS costs me £530 a year garaged in central London for 5k miles a year with an agreed value of £50,000. I just renewed on this basis yesterday with a a company called Hagerty (based at Silverstone). http://www.hagertyinsurance.co.uk/ (they also give a PCGB discout). I've been with them for the last couple of years and can't recommend them highly enough ...........

Speak to Emma and say you were recommended by Rick Cannell

They have come up absoloute trumps for my personal 'fleet' (2x modified Porsche, Range Rover and Daimler Super V8R) two years in a row.

When I did have to make a small claim last year (Range Rover broken in to and Sat-Navv stolen) I was paid out within 3 working days.

I have no connection with the company beyond they were very highly recommended to me and the senior partner is an Pure-GT member.
