Insuring two cars

My insurance is coming up for renewal for my Golf GTI (practical car) and I was wondering if there is any saving by using the same company or if there is a form of combined insurance along with my boxster s. I am the only driver on the policies, so from an accident point of view only one car is at risk at any one time. I know that quite a few of you run more than one car so would appreciate your experience (and also whether the no claims on one policy can be applied to your other car if you insure with the same company).

Nick,

I recently bought myself a second car and after realising that a no claims bonus only applies to one car (what a rip off!) and that no, I couldn't enter 'six years ncb' on my second car's proposal form I called my first car's insurer. They offered to 'mirror' my no claims onto my second car. Fortunately their quote was very close to the best that I could find. They said that if I left after a year that I'd only have one year's ncb though.

This was with elephant.co.uk. I have heard similar from privilege, but again only if you insure both cars with them

It's always been the case that 'no claims discount' applies to a particular policy rather than a car.

Years ago I kept my "no claims" alive by insuring a moped.

Yes you can only drive one car at a time - but it is at risk when you are driving the other one anyway (from theft, damage, fire, etc).

Some companies will give a "starter" no-claims on your second car, and if one car is going to be used for "fun" only, consider a classic or limited milage scheme. Some of these don't actually give a no-claims and have low pemiums as a default.

How i did it was use my 10 yrs no claims bonus on my boxster insured my Golf TDI ( I didn't have any no claims for this car) with the same company and they mirrored my no claims. After a year my renewal came through and full no claims discount was printed clearly on it!! and on the Boxster renewal 3months later. BINGO i could then shop around for the best quote with full no claims, two cars insured at very low premiums. The insurance company was Churchill.
