Interchangeable Gearbox

Mac944

New member
Hello,

I'm currently in the process of an engine swap, from a 2.7 8v to an S2 3.0 for my 944 race car.

The current gearbox is running a Guards diff and was refurbished by a previous owner a few years ago.

Can I keep the current gearbox and diff as is or will I need to either modify or change to an S2 gearbox?

If I need to change, will I also need to swap driveshafts?

Am I likely to be able to reuse the diff?

Can I reuse the torque tube/propshaft?

Can anyone recommend a company for refurbishing gearboxes?

Many thanks

Only difference is in the gearing and final drive. Shorter I think on 8v n/a cars and longer on S2 and longest on Turbo.

Gearbox are externally 100% identical, so you won't have to do anything.

Torque tube won't need to be swapped either.

Thank you both for your replies.

As the car is highly unlikely to reach top speed will I need to worry much about the final drive and shorter gearing?

ISTR its mostly the lower 5th, nice advantage to have if of course you compete in a series/championship that is OK with you running non-standard gear ratios, it tends to be in the regs in most production car based championships.

Interesting!

The regs state original gearbox but nothing specifically about gear ratios. If it was an issue I could just swap in the S2 box at some point, for now at least the engine swap can take place and I have some peace of mind I won't shread the box.

Thanks to all for your help! Much appreciated!

Re driveshafts - you should be able to re-use your existing ones (CV joints and driveshafts) - the only difference between early and S2 / Turbo ones is that the CV joints have a different number of splines - so you can't use early CV joints with a late driveshaft and vice versa, but the CV and driveshaft assemblies when complete are interchangeable.
