Interested in finding some history of my 944

I got my 944 with absolutely no history other than being told that it had an engine rebuild from a garage that my Dad uses regularly (not asked them to what extent it was rebuilt or even if they remember it) and absolutely nothing else. It seems at one point the car was well loved as it was specced up fairly well from new (air con and foglights on an 83) and has had a fairly good looking respray in the past and possibly sill repair as there is only a tiny hint of rust when looking inside the vents on the door pillars, but then I don't know how much they rust on the early models, especially if it's been dry stored a lot.

At some point one of the owners didn't give the car such great respect and bodged the wrong sized speakers into the front doors leaving me with little option but to replace the drivers door and attempt a repair on the drivers side. Also I removed the worst stereo wiring I've ever seen including an amplifier where the main power supply was coming from the ignition switch and had dodgy soldering all over it.

The only interesting part of what I know about it (besides the engine rebuild) is a sticker from the bromley motor pageant one make parking from 1999.

Does anybody here know of my car or any way in which I can enquire about its past? The Reg is IIB 4336 at the moment but no idea what the original plate was or even if it it wearing it.

Cheers
Rob

To be honest, I'd leave the doors as they are. 6x4 speakers ain't much comp compared to 6.5" speakers where you get more variety and can achieve better SQ, not to mention midbass which you seriously lack with 6x4s.

I can't leave them as they are, the speakers were 16cm round jobbies only held in by 2 screws and only went in because the door behind has been cut away.

Edited to add: Not too fussed about sound quality in it, would rather have nice looking doors and some alright speakers as I have a brand new company car with a nice sounding stereo to drown out the horrible diesel engine. If I need to fit some larger ones in the rear behind the panels then that's not such a problem.

In a 944 that's near impossible due to the door structure. Only way around it is to either get a set of donor door cards and build solid door baffles from Birch Ply or MDF so as to give you the necessary solid mounting and clearance.

Anyway, got some pics of the car? It seems to be a nice colour in your avatar.

To be honest the speakers are pretty much the last things on my to do list at the moment, they certainly sit further down than replacing the fuel & brake lines and the cracked windscreen.

Here are some pics I took a couple of weeks ago, the colour isn't original but it's certainly growing on me especially as I'm getting bored of seeing a sea of silver every time I'm on the motorway. Excuse the tinted rear lights, they're going before it meets the road as I detest them.

Ah, I didn't know of the other problems, fair enough.

I quite like the colour to be honest. Agree with the rear lenses. A mate of mine wants me to tint them on my S2, but I wasn't too sure. Still, one I saw had all red clusters on the back.

Good colour. Not unlike Baltic but a bit darker. Looks good.

Speakers - it seems that several have had bodged in speakers. And indeed, even finding 6x4's that fit in the holes is not that easy - I bought some that were supposed to fit but they don't, really, and I had to make a baffle to get them in there. Not great.

With you all the way on those rear lights. The standard look is best for some many things, this included.

I've just replaced my head unit with a subtle pioneer unit and 6x4 JBL speakers from ebay, very good set-up but could use an amp, im now thinking!

Looks nice and I like the matching wheel spokes. Have to say Oli, it's nothing like Baltic Blue, looks very close to the rare turquoise that I believe was a special colour. A chap I know on TIPEC has an S.2 in what I reckon is the same colour with clear lenses all round, I think I have pic somewhere [;)]

If it were me I'd change the front and side indicators to clear as I think the colour clashes a bit with orange. Agree on the rear lights - why tint them and leave the others amber? [&:]

Have to say, sir, it's significantly more like Baltic Blue than, say, black. Or white. Or (pink) red. Or that rather nice maraschino burgandy red. Or that off-silver whose name I can't remember. Leinen or something.

I rest my case.

(P.S. Evning in the pub. Makes me querrulous. You wouldn't believe how long it's taken me to type this f cking message.)

That's two drunkards on the forum LOL.

I'd say out the Porker colours it's closest to Baltic, but it's almost like the very rare Turquoise blue that some 944s came in.

Didn't mean to wind you up Oli, but here's Baltic...
Don't worry, not wound up at all!

Baltic changes a lot depending upon the light and how clean it is. The pictures above show a colour not dissimilar from that on my Baltic S2 when it is polished and viewed in bright light.

Your first port of call should be to send £5 to the DVLA to get the owner history of your car. This will also flag up any previous registration changes that have taken place. Then it's a case of getting the pen and paper out and sending off letters to previous owners and hoping that a) they still live at the address and b) that they have time to write back.

You need a form V888 which you can download from here
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/Doitonlinemotoring/DG_10031645

Takes a couple months mind.

Morning Oli.....groan.....no cider for me today :ROFLMAO:

Here's a pic of the car I meant - belongs to Kev who goes by the name of 'Porsche' on TIPEC....

KevinsS2.jpg

I'll drop him a line and see if I can get further details. I know he's had it for 5+ years.

BTW I read your route for the Scottish trip and noted the details of route for possible exploration

Kev has popped up in a thread I started on TIPEC previous but after seeing his car in the flesh at Gaydon I'm not entirely sure if it is the same colour although it is very close. It is definitely not the original colour as the inside of the engine bay and boot are black.

After seeing the 17 year old challenge on Top Gear it seems like it may also be the Turquoise of May's Golf. At some point I'll take a headlight cover to Halfords and have a flick through the colour chart book they have there.

Im confused. Whats the colour code for the paint that was originally on the car? Has the vehicle had a colour change?

No idea what the original code was but it was black (probably only one black for the year) and yes it has had a colour change as it is now blue.
