Interesting electric problem! Help needed!

So I'm finished with the mechanical jobs for now and on to a couple of electrical ones.

My 3rd brake light comes on and flickers when the key is out the ignition and you shut the boot. It does not seem to start flashing until the mechanism starts latching over.

It gets weird....

I took the boot lining out to check for moisture ingress, it's dry. However it does not happen when the interior boot light is disconnected!!! I've plugged it in and removed it multiple times to check.

Does anyone know the wiring of a 987.1 well enough to understand what's going on? Why would removing the interior light help and is it connected to the 3rd brake light?
