Interesting wipers

The driver's side wiper on my '86 Lux stopped in heavy rain last night - on my way to a regional pcgb meeting, just for irony - and we found that the ball and socket joint of the connecting rod just keeps popping out. There doesn't seem to be anything to adjust or tighten, so how do I keep it in place? An odd fault but it'll keep the car off the road unless I get any helpful suggestions!

Very common failure due to grit from screen runoff going into the cup and abrading it away. Do a search, but the gist is that a new rod with nylon cup is about £7 from an OPC. You need the short one when they ask. If you're really unlucky the ball will be worn too and then you need a new assembly at about £70+VAT from the OPC.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Exactly as Fen says.

My OPC didn't have one in stock, but I ran the car for a fortnight with approximately eleventeen (maybe it was thirty twelve) elastic bands holding the ball in the cup and it worked just fine.[8D]

Grease the new one before you fit, and regrease every few months ~ if you wanted to actually design a cup fitting that would trap maximum water and crap coming off the screen - this would be it.[]

My motor home did exactly the same. Peugot only sell the complete assembly..........£750 + VAT

So I screwed a self tapper through the edge of the plastic ball joint........3 years ago!

Don't grease if the bearing surface is plastic.

......and give the balljoint a squirt of grease every six months to try and extend the life of the new one. When I first got my car the wiper motor failed £££££ because my balljoint had been bodged in place with tiewraps and gradually burnt out the motor []

Thanks to everyone for all the information. Much appreciated! I've just fitted some rubber bands for the time being - although unable to find genuine Porsche ones.
