Interior changes

OK, I brought my car as an ex demo, so what's it's got was not all my choosing, anyway love the car but would like to make some cosmetic changes to the interior so I have a few questions...

The list of things I'd like to change would include red leather to the centre section of the seats and maybe part of the door cards, red seat belts and a red dial for the Rev counter.

Can anyone recommend good places to go to to get this work done?

Also what's the situation with warranties and cosmetic changes such as this?
I mean will Porsche refuse to extend the warranty on a car because it has reupholstered seats or different colour seat belts?

Quite possibly as it's a well known fact that red upholstery causes engine failures etc........[;)]

You can talk to your opc they might be able to do some of this for an OK price -or try a specialist like for instance Porscheshop.

Hi Russell, not seen you much this year[;)] try these people http://www.design911.co.uk.
I have used them in the past for interior parts on 996, and they do parts for the 991,inc carbon,
think you will find that you would have to resort to your local opc for door cards and leather
options from the exclusive range?, only problem would be cost[8|],having checked the price
of carbon sills for example I would leave it be.
Warrenty I cannot see that being a problem ,but would be worth checking.

These are the go to people for interiors. I'm sure they could do the seats and door cards etc.

Your opc will probably retro fit seat belts and possibly dials.

Let us know how you get on [;)]

Thanks guys,

Contacted an OPC, seat belts no problem, Rev counter no problem if I buy the whole binnacle :-/
The seats, no problem with the current warranty but it would not cover seat related problems like squeaks and rattles etc.
However more interestingly when it comes to extending the warranty (if I or anyone wanted to in the future) it would not happen as 3rd party modification.

What I expected TBH

Russell,
There are plenty of people offering replacement dial faces - I've just googled several.
As regards the seats, reupholstering is a repair not a modification. As the original Porsche frame is being retained, I fail to see how this can invalidate extended warranty.

It sounds as if you have a less than positive PC

Clive.

I guess it depends how the warranty covers the seats. If Porsche won't let you change the wiper blades (haven't checked myself but so many on here say) then it doesn't surprise me that if someone other than Porsche has hacked into the seat upholstery and even if they didn't go anywhere near the seat heater or seat motors, if one of those components failed you can see them saying the seat has been modified in an unauthorized way or by an unapproved person.

The irony is, if you take out a Porsche warranty against accidental damage to the leather, it will be an approved non-Porsche third party that will do the repair, not Porsche. But if you take it to the place yourself, you might be on a sticky wicket.

Out of curiosity, how much do they want for Porsche Exclusive to do it?

It might be one of those ones where buying a brand new car and spec'ing it exactly how you want it is the way to go and when buying used, just take your mind off personalisation until you're out of warranty. I don't buy brand new cars but I can see why many people do. It must feel really good to personalise a car to your exact tastes.

Yes, sometimes the retrofit can cost more than factory fit because there's more labour involved in disassembly and assembly than a first time fit whist the car is being built. No extra labour for the craftsman to pick up a difference of leather the first time around.

Charging extra for factory fit coloured dials is a bit naughty the. The various colour plastics are all worth the same surely! But then retrofit has labour on top as well. I bet they want serious money for what yields a relatively small change.

Not bothered about warrant on the seats or door cards etc, the problem is that (as understand it) if I modify the upholstery using a 3rd party company and after 3 years if I (or anyone else in the future) wanted to extend the warranty on the car with Porsche, they would not extend it for any of the car due to the mods.

I can understand not warranting an engine or gearbox due to non standard mechanical mods etc that could stress or damage to very expensive parts, but making cosmetic changes to the interior or exterior for that matter does not affect anything of any importance. It would be like having a decal or a wrap on the car and not extending the warranty.

It's blooming crackers!

I'm not sure that's correct, Russell.
Provided your vehicle passes the 111 point check, then you will get an extended warranty.
I do not believe this check covers cosmetic items such as the colour of the seat material, the dials or door cards. It is confirmation to the potential insurers that the vehicle is sound and accords with the manufacturer's mechanical specification.

To say that superficial cabin alterations made for the comfort of the owner, will jeopardise warranties is scaremongering IMHO, but it's probably something to discuss fully with your PC before embarking on costly cabin upgrades.

The 111 point check form in front of me includes in Section H Interior (function and condition)

"Item 65 Seat and head restraint upholstery - Upholstery in clean, undamaged condition etc."

However I do agree however that we can get unnecessarily concerned about the risk of non-standard windscreen wipers being used to disallow engine blow-up claims

I wonder if this interior colour would have been passed though...

Cripes,
That takes "pimp my ride" into a new dimension! [:(]
Nothing in the checklist about trim and upholstery being original or not, then.
I'm not sure that 111 point check sheet is generally available. Is it possible to publish it here, Ralph?
If so I can archive it in our technical section for future reference.

Clive.
