Interior Fan

Hi,

The interior fan for the windscreen has started going into overdrive when I turn it on and it makes a loud clattering sound.

Any ideas what this might be? Fan motor, loose blade? I want to take it out and have a look but I'm a bit of an amateur and couldn't see anything in the Haynes manual about how to access it.

Cheers,

Ed.

Once you take the cardboard panel off at the rear of the luggage compartment which hides the rear of the dash compartment it all becomes apparant as Vic says.

Thanks,

Hopefully this won't be an embarassing test of my common sense! Is there anything obvious to see if it's a problem with the motor i.e. need to replace, I don't know if this is a common problem or whether it is easier and cheaper to just replace the unit generally. Clearly if something has sheared then that should be apparent.

Ok, I removed the fan and ran it again with it lying down. What happens is when it's turned on it start off normally very briefly and then goes at top speed with the central drive rattling round in its housing as if it's loose.

Is there anything in the photo to suggest that something is missing or broken to secure it properly in place?

Your photo looks the same as one I have on the shelf here. It looks like you have the 4 metal clips down the center too but a little tricky to see.

You can take the housing apart into two halves. There are two metal circle clips on the side of the housing you can see on your photo and four on the opposite site. They go around little plastic dimples (this should make sense with the unit in front of you). Prise these off carefully and the body should seperate into two halves and you can see what's going on inside.

If you have a digital camera or camera phone take some photos as you take it apart so you can see how it goes back together.

I ve a nasty feeling the bearing just wears out and then rattles around a lot ............sorry the only remedy i know is buy a new one !

No worries, thanks for advice. In some ways that's easier than having to dismantle and rebuild it! How do I get the main cables out the bottom to remove it fully? I've taken the two screws out but can't seem to get the whole plastic unit with the three wires attached out.

You should see what is still available first. Various bits may be no longer available so you might have to look for a second hand one.

The PET seems to list the complete unit and also just the motor and fan part but doesn't say if either is still available.

I believe you have to split the unit unless you can buy the whole thing. My understanding is that splitting the unit allows the circular casing for the motor and fan to be removed from the unit after unplugging the two wires from the motor. The four metal clips down the side of the inner part holds the motor into the round plastic casing but it pulls out the wrong side to do it whilst the unit is still together. Also once split you can see how the wires are attached to the underside of the external connector.
