Interior retrimmers

hi guys and girls I'm looking for a reputable retrimmers in the Essex area who can retrim by early dashboard in the proper material. We've had one done already but are not happy with the end result so want to try again as I can't seem to find any new brown dashboards many thanks Danny

Hi Danny

Can't help in Essex but Hampshire isn't a million miles away, there you'll find Southbound Trimmers who are recognised as one of the best if not the best, trimmers for Porsche. I had my front seats recovered in full leather some 17 years ago now, Southbound were the only company who could supply the correct material for the middle sections. Porsche are unique in the spacing of the holes, might not matter to some...did to me...

A possible alternative, again not in the Essex area, more like Oxford is 'Retro Restorer' (google search should find him). He's not directly a re-trimmer but I was chatting to him and he talked about a company he uses that re-trim dashboards in the standard vinyl finish using a vacuum forming method. Sounded good, but possibly pricey! Might even have been Southbound he was talking about...
Word of caution though. I took my car to him for a quote for bodywork over 3 weeks ago now and he's still not got round to sending me the quote even though he said it would be with me last weekend...

He is a clown - avoid at all costs.

I can recommend someone in the Midlands. Seen on TV a lot now (VWs usually), but it was Porsche seats that got him there and he is still sensibly priced.

I was going to comment that I'd seen a car with bad rot back after a trip to Retro Restorer - may have even been on here?

Okay so thanks for the feedback on Retro-Restorer then guy's. Guess I'll count myself lucky he's not yet quoted and I've committed. Have to say after my visit I was impressed with his knowledge, and description of the process and materials he uses (galvanized steel for starters).

Keen to hear more on your opinion on Retro restorer?

I follow him on Instagram and FB and I have to say I'm always impressed with what I see.

Personal dealings.
Vicarious experience, and seeing his performance here when his shoddy work was criticised.

I have to say, when I visited Nash (aka Retro Restorer) and he did a detailed assessment of my car and described his processes I was very impressed. That is waning rapidly as I await the quote for the work which is now almost a month since I took the time to travel and visit him. Based on this I am loosing confidence in his ability to do the work to any sort of planned timescale regardless of whether it's good or not. I'll await the quote and go from there...
Since I've been waiting so long, I've got a quote from a more local VW restorer. He may not have the same level of experience of 944's but is a decent metal basher who knows his onions. He's assessed, quoted and booked the car in for a date in the not too distant future all within the time I'm awaiting a quote from Nash....
Anyone on here used Retro Restorer and able to comment further on his workmanship (and timescales!)?

He showed himself up when his poor work was criticised here. He let me down repeatedly over repair panels and ended up blocking a friend who was dealing with it for me.

Caveat emptor.

I have two really annoying lines on a otherwise immaculate Dashboard and know its only time before they develop into two cracks,,
Any ideas of getting this sorted?,,,,spoke to southbound and they only re-trim in leather and it's just two lines of vinyl that need sorting,,, sorry for digressing Danny
Cheers jasonp

My car has been to Nash a couple of times. I've always been reasonably impressed in terms of quality of work although you do need to keep pestering him as they are not good at sticking to deadlines. They repaired some rust on the A pillar and resprayed the nose where it was badly stone chipped. Not concours by any standard but good colour match and quality is ok for what I paid.

I had a seat retrimmed last year by a guy in Beaconsfield. Burgundy leather. Exact match on the grain although 30 years of UV radiation means colour match was difficult but it's now maturing and matching nicely. I think it was AJ Trimming from memory. Not sure if he does dashboards though.

Haviby stripped and leather skinned a couple of dashes I can tell you that the lines in the vinyl are already hidden cracks. The underlying foam cracks and pulls apart and tears the vinyl as it shrinks back.

The only ways to deal with it are eithe to remove the glued vinyl, fill and sand the cracks with flexible filler and recover the dash OR fill and sand the cracks externally (not sure how you'd match the vinyl texture) and then spray the whole dash with a leather colourant and sealant kit.
