After reading the post about the unfortunate guy that had a intermediate shaft bearing faliure. Got a bit worried that he said it is a common problem and a desighn fault with the 986 engine, is this the case? my wife and i both have a 97 + a 98 boxster. are the early boxsters to be avoided, they both have 80,000 miles on the clock, is there any other problems with them?
regards dawson.

You don't hear much about intermediate shaft failures on the early cars. I was told by some mechanics that Porsche switched from a double to a single bearing, and then the failures started. I forget what year the change was made, but I'm going to say 2001.

Not something to dwell on. If it's going to go then it's going to go. Until then, I should forget it and keep on enjoying your cars.

At 80k miles, it seems that you are way beyond what appears to be the most common failure point. A good few 20 - 30k milers seem to have suffered if posts on here are anything to go by.

It's still not clear to me what is the root cause of the problem. Bearing failure? Metal fatigue on the shaft? Could be either. Maybe a duff batch of parts? Likely to be a smallish number of failures though. At least, thats how I'm viewing it! [8|]

There are hundreds of thousand 986's out there how many have ever developed this "common" fault [][&o] A few hundred cars probably [:'(]

On the 28th of August, the 100,000th Porsche Boxster car was made at Valmet Automotive in Uusikaupunki. The Jubilee car is a silver Porsche Boxster S. It is also the first Porsche Boxster of model year 2004 to be delivered to a German customer.

The chap with the failure in his car actually said : ".... They [the OPC] have told me that this is not common ....".
