Intermittant window operation

Just working my way through a few long neglected electrical gremlins on my car. I'm having trouble with both electric window operation. The windows work now and again, but always seem to work when I open the door and operate the switches? I'm thinking maybe one of the cables going into the door is open circuit sometimes and opening the door (straightening the cable) clears the fault, or am I missing something obvious here?

TIA

Can't help with the resolution only to say that, by design, the windows should operate with the door(s) open regardless of whether the ignition is on. My '85 Targa is like that and my 944 was also. When you open the door you should hear a relay operate - may be barely audible - but I think that's how it works. If they operate as you say, surely that proves that the switches and motors are OK (911 windows can be notoriously slow, don't forget) so perhaps your problem is with the supply to/from the ignition, assuming it's not all one set of wires, if you see what I mean.

As an aside, I appear to have a car where the front speakers only work when the doors are shut! Have no idea why that should be but since I rarely drive with the doors open I think I'll leave it!!

Electrisicals - work of the devil.

Regards.
