Intermittent Ignition Issues

Just recently have been experiencing an intermittent fault when trying to start the car. She normally fires first turn of the key nut now and again recently there has been nothing but a click but fires Ok after a couple of attempts and then it disappears again. Is this likely to be an ignition switch issue or the alternator?

Many Thanks,
Gee

Battery or ignition coil pack, I would say. Difficult to say from your description. If the engine struggles to turn over - it's the former. If it turns over but refuses to fire up right away - the latter.

There are a few possible faults that will produce those intermittent symptoms.
1. Battery (if fitted with an original Porsche Moll battery change it for Bosch S5)
2. Starter motor
3. Wiring loom between starter and alternator (Porsche have produced a repair loom section)
I have a few 997 Gen 1 owners in my region who have ended up doing all three.

Not sure if you have managed to fix this fault but I had exactly the same on my 997T. There were no fault codes when the OPC checked it and they said that as they couldn't find a fault they couldn't change it under the warranty. I eventually managed to catch the clicking and non starting on video, sent it to the OPC and then it was agreed that they would change the starter motor. No issues since.

Thanks Guys,

Once the car starts it runs perfectly so I had ruled out coil pack or similar - it seems to be the switch or starter motor so I guess a trip to Zentrum is in order.
