Intermittent lack of power

the engine occasionally dies usually when accelerating but not always, it lasts for about two seconds and then continues as normal.
Sometimes when this happens the dash says the gear selector is not engaged and red light flashes on D and the gear selected does not
not show after a few seconds it usually sorts its self out and all is normal. I have just had the transmission and filter changed as advised this could be the problem but it has not.
any ideas what this problem may be would greatly appreciated

Do you mean that the engine dies in drive or only when it's changing gear? A proper diagnostic check should flag up any engine/transmission error codes.

If the problem wasn't present before the transmission fluid change, are you sure that the correct procedure was used (see http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Boxster_Tech/35-TRANS-Auto_Fluid_Change/35-TRANS-Auto_Fluid_Change.htm ).

Hi Jeff

The engine dies when in gear, the problem existed before the diagnostic recommended a transmission oil and filter replacement.
I am satisfied the correct procedure for the oil and filter replacement was followed.
I am surprised the diagnostic did not flag any other problems?
thanks for your first reply

I'm surprised that the diagnostics didn't flag up any problems Paul. Was either a Durametric or a PIWIS system used, because a standard OBD2 diagnostic kit won't necessarily show up all the error codes?

Because the fault is intermittent, it does sound as though it's electrical rather than mechanical; but you never know. It may be something as simple as a faulty switch on the gear selector and the engine is cutting out because the ECU thinks that the transmission out of gear. I assume that you've tried steering clear of D and shifting the gears manually to see if that clears the problem.

What year/mileage is car BTW?

Jeff

Hi Jeff the engine does cut out when driving in M
But much less than when driving in D! All very odd.
There is no pattern. 05 Boxter s 3.2 52k

Hi Jeff
I think what you are saying about gear selector switch could be faulty and sending not in gear signal to ECU could be the problem.
I think this could happen regardless if the drive is in M or D?
Is the switch you mentioned the Tiptronic Gear sensor? and is this linked to the ECU?
I very much appreciate your comments.

Paul
