intermittent noise

Does any one know what this intermittent noise I keep getting , it sounds like a motor bike passing, it's coming from the off side wing area. my car is a 993 cab. Could the oil filter make this noise due to clucked up oil I only drive it week ends when it's not raining. Driven under a thousand miles this year.

off side rear wing, oil I brought from auto farm. talking about it today someone said it could be power steering pulley, bearing may be worn.

sorry also engine running hot.

yes, but can you tell us what the oil is. What is the mileage on the car, has it started suddenly,or getting worse over time, have you had any work, servicing on the car recently?

Heat shield rusty and resonating creating and intermittant noise? Shouldn't impact the engine running hot though.

My money's on partially clogged up oil filter needing changed along with oil.

When were they last changed?

Can you hear noise only at tickover and not when driving? Could you also describe the noise as a type of gurgling sound?

It sounds like a electric Ariel motor going up or down, The engine is running sweet only replying to early message if engine hot or cold. I've done about 3500 miles since last oil change which will be 3 years come Christmas.

Seriously?

You have not changed the oil for 3 years?

Yep well, the first thing you need to do is have the oil and filters changed, and from now on you should have this done every year, and I suggest you get the car in for a proper service, gearbox oil, plugs checked, and all the stuff in the schedule. You may find the strange noises you are getting will vanish! Don't delay, you could lose the engine!! There are several good indies close by, get one to sort the car for you.

If your steering rack has developed a leak (they seem to wear out and need a refurb about 90 - 100K miles) and your power steering fluid is getting low then the pump, which is in the engine bay, starts to grind and might be the sound you are hearing. You can check the level in the power steering fluid container where you fill it up. I'm thinking this is also in the engine bay but it has been a while since I looked.

The other 'grindy' type of noise is the spoiler going up and down if the gear mechanism or bearing has lost its grease. Sounds like a coffee grinder as it goes up or down. You can test this easily when stationary by using the switch in the car to manually raise and lower it.

Regarding engine oil; in my opinion it depends what oil you have in it how long is the max time before changing but I wouldn't go over 2 years (not wanting to start an oil fight here).

Ian.

As Ian says the power steering will make such a noise if the fluid is low. If you're stationary with the engine running and you turn the steering to full lock and get the noise, which then disappears when you straighten the wheels, you can be sure this is the problem.

Looks like this will be a process of elimination to get to the root cause.

I was also saying

Or both in fact?

Certainly try all the simple checks listed above then even if you find the reason, it will only be of benefit to change oil + filter anyway, based on its age and the fact it's been sitting static for much of those 3 years so won't be in the best of health.
