Intermittently Stiff Tiptronic Gear Selector

In my 987 Boxster 2.7 Tiptronic, sometimes after the car has been on a long-ish journey and the engine is still hot, when I move the gear selector between Park, Reverse and Drive it's very stiff and difficult to move. It still goes into gear fine, but can be awkward to move. When the car's cool again the lever moves more freely and precisely. Is this a common thing with Porsche Tiptronics or is it something that may need looking into?

Thanks.

Be careful! Get your car in to a workshop soon - there's a known problem with the selection system.

You need to search the forum for something I posted a few months ago as I had the same problem, my car was rendered immobile and gearless, and it cost me 500 to get it fixed by the OPC, all for the sake of a part costing pennies.
Don't have time just now to look out the earlier post but I'll check back when I do.

Regards
Andy

I've just read that post "Broken Tip anyone?". It seems my car is the same year and very similar mileage as to when yours broke.

I'll give a garage a call about it. I've got an AA gold warranty with the car. Do you think that would cover it?

My Tip 911 had the same symptoms that you describe in the first post.

The OPC said it was simply a case of adjusting the linkage from the Selector to the Box.

The adjustment was done last year and solved the problem completely.

Oh right. Did it feel fine when the car was cold also? How much did that cost to get fixed?

Hot or cold or Boiling hot after a track day, the selector lever moves sweetly after the adjustment.

The car was under Warranty so it was a no cost fix but I think it was a quick fix so it would not have cost too much anyway.

Before you commit one way or the other, why not phone your local OPC, tell them your problem and see what they suggest ? Maybe they will say it's an adjustment issue or maybe itcould be something more sinister ? You only have the cost of a phone call to loose.

Hi again, I agree with what has been posted after my message. I was unlucky - didn't note the symptoms nor did I know it was a "known" problem (seems linkage is the same for 911's and Boxsters) otherwise I would have had it checked. As I think I've said, it's a small part which caused the problem, apparently due to inadequate lubrication, so if you get it lubed now you may save yourself some pain. Best of luck.

my cayman s had exactly this problem-1st thought was as per tonys problem-a linkage problem-that was looked into and greased but still when hot it was stiff-so back it went and this time they replaced the housing that the selector goes into-it was basically made too tight to take the selector-it only mattered when the elector was hot and expanded into the surrounding plastic housing-when cool it slotted back and fro fine-
so they replaced the housing and lo! no problem-sweet as a nut freely moves when hot or cold-not a common problem i was told .
all was well in the end-but opc did not accept it was a fault from the manufacture and refused to pay-so an indi did it for £200,and i didnt renew my warranty[]

yes it's a bit of plastic linkage at the rear of the car, which due to the heat goes brittle after a number of years and breaks, leaving you stranded in my case with the car stuck in Drive and of course refusing to start. Luckily my breakdown cover got me back to my local Porsche guy (The brilliant Nelson Porsche in Stockton on Tees) Jamie, god bless him, had it fixed in no time and only charged a few quid for the part.

I also have a 987 2.7 May 06 and have just gone out to the garage and checked it out from cold -2 and it moves the way it always does with a little effort .Have found in the past especially when hot it takes a bit of force to move it have only experienced this a few times. The problem being I do not know anyone else that has gaytronic[:D] so have nothing to compare it with.
