I had a similar problem with our car when the slider switch got moved by 'Someone'
You may have got a bit confused where the switch position for Auto is. My guess is that you are sitting in the car scratching your head and trying all positions and only the 'off' turns the light off. I am sure that if the ignition key is in the ignition switch the cabin lights stay on in the Auto position irrespective of whether you open and close the doors. Beside that there is a time delay circuit on the switching off in the Auto position.
Try the swich in one position, then remove the key and get out and lock the car. If the light goes out, great, but if it don't, try the other position. If it goes out, great, but if it don't, you have got a fault !!!

Meantime will have a look at Tony's suggestions.I think it all started when I recharged the Battery via the terminals under the bonnet.When I got into car yesterday and switched on the rear courtesy lights came on and would not go off till i pushed the switch.Will investigate thanks.
