iPhone 5 with Universal Audio Interface

I was disappointed to find that my new iPhone 5 doesn't fit under the armrest in the Universal Audio Interface tray. The problem, as I am sure others have discovered, is that using the standard Apple 30-pin to Lightning adaptor adds length to the already longer iPhone 5 so there is no way it can be squeezed into the tray.

The solution is to use Apple's alternative Lightning to 30-pin cable which costs a whopping £30 but does the trick. With the smaller Lightning plug, the iPhone 5 is just the right size to fit into the tray. The short Apple cable (8in, including connectors) can be coiled on top of the phone. I posted some pictures on my blog if anyone has the same problem. Incidentally, the Apple cable permits charging of the phone, which is an important aspect.

I have my iPhone running TomTom/RoadPilot speed safety zone apps on the seat beside me (I can hear - don't need to see) or on a windscreen mount, both with a power lead to one of the two power sockets, the iPhone is connected via bluetooth to the car's phone system, and I have downloaded all music onto a 32Gb USB dongle which is plugged into the UAI.

I figured I did not want to keep taking the phone in and out of the UAI tray and as you say it does not really fit very well, never mind the connector design "upgrade"

But of course it is all a matter of individual preference and usage.

You have a point on the problem of taking the phone in and out. On several occasions I've forgotten to take the phone with me and had to go back to the car. I use the armrest tray only for longer journeys and, for short trips do as you do.

You are obviously younger than I am because I keep phone in pocket so I don't lose it but forget where I left the car, but have an app for that!

I doubt I am younger. But I take the point... we need every help we can get to avoid losing our toys. At least I take comfort from the fact that leaving the phone in the car means I can use Find My Phone to find the car.

I failed miserably but I bow to your experience. When I tried using the adaptor added to the standard 30-pin plug from the UAI I simply couldn't fit the 5, even diagonally. The 8in cable definitely makes it easier and is probably worth the extra £5 cost if starting from scratch.

I can't get to the car to take a pic today sadly, but if you fold the OEM cable round on itself and have the phone facing forwards in the arm rest, a solid tap of the lid will keep it closed without damaging phone, case or lid. Bit awkward though I must admit, and I struggled at first until brute force and ignorance won! :D

Your idea sounds much better tbh, sadly those cables weren't available when I bought my adaptor.
