I understand that the Porsche iPod adapter is simply a FM transmitter and iPod holder that fits in the centre console box and power adapter. My local dealer told me that it was a bit of a waste of time. Better to go with a Denison or mObridge adapter that links to the PCM.

I posted a thread (A long thread []) a while back which detailed an install of a Dension kit. Upto this date it has proved completely faultless and you get the full sound quality of your system (I have the Bose option).
My advice (if you want it [:-]), read my thread and then go for the Dension install.

Interested in installing MoBridge ipod to my 997 C4S, how much does the insatllation cost and who is doing it?
Jon
There are a couple of options depending on where you are based, and some people even fit them themselves with the step-by-step photographic instructions. If you already have a CD changer, it takes about 15 minutes. If you don't, it takes about 1 hour.
Thanks - I'm interested in one of these and now the price has come down it's not looking quite so expensive (esp if I fit it myself).

15 mins to fit?? So, if you have the CD changer can you mount the iPod in the front compartment (i.e. next to the changer) without removing any of the interior trim? I presume the CD changer has a power supply - do you know if this is a permenant live or switched on the ignition?

The easiest install is to unplug the CD Changer (remove from car) and use the cabling from the CD Changer for the mObridge. It's a very simple installation that does not require you to remove any interior trim. Step-by-step instructions are provided by a previous customer who did the install himself.

mObridge does a good job, although I personally do find the controls a little querky through the PCM. I suppose it is just what you get used to over time.
I wouldn't recommend that you try to learn to mObridge while driving. Learn all the functions on your drive or parking space first. My iPod has a lot of albums on it and the menus take a little time to "load" from the mObrdige to the PCM.
I'm going to experiment with more playlists as this will make my life easier on long drives.

I bought the mObridge and had it installed locally in Ealing. I asked for the iPod to be located in the glove box for easy access.

Because the PCM processes all track names within a playlist during navigation (backwards/forwards etc), it is recommended to keep each playlist to less than 250 songs or so (depends on how long track titles are) to ensure the maximum speed of operation.
The mObridge supports an unlimited number of playlists, however, and this is the best way to organise music and maintain maximum speed.

Thanks OceanCarrera, I'm happy with the mObridge and it's install and will follow your advice. I had a play with it last night and I think there it would be better to reduce the 250 song limit to 99 songs, then you will not have to use forwards or backwards.
After all, 99 songs is approx 7.5 hours of music....

Planning on having one fitted in 3 weeks or so, I just hope that installation does not create more squeaks or rattles!

Personally I can't see the point of the Porsche option. The dension unit costs 280 pounds and you can install it yourself if you have a cross head screwdriver, a coulpe of scotch lock connectors and a pair of pliers. The Dension unit allows you to play MP3 files , either from an i pod or USB drive and displays the album name and track list. You can also search the directory by album , artist or folder. Everything is displayed and controlled via the PCM screen. If you also take the option of having the multi function steering wheel controls added, it makes for a very user friendly system. The dension unit also allows you to keep your existing CD changer and switch back to it by a hardware switch. Unless you really want the i pod in the car , there is plenty of space to put it under the cover in the front luggage compartment. The connection to the PCM from the Dension or mobridge uses the MOST fibre optic , so its the best you can get, and both allow charging of the ipod. The dension also has the option for a bluetooth connection as well I beleive.
All true for the mObridge too (except that the mObridge supports the iPod only and is assured of being 100% compatible as an official Apple Developer).
The mObridge draws 1/6th the power draw of the Dension and has a 24bit ADC.
Some may be interested to know that the mObridge is a dealer fit option by Porsche in Australia.
The OEM Porsche factory option is not very good and (imho) unsafe as you still have to control the iPod in your hand whilst driving... have you ever tried this? It's worse than texting on your mobile phone...

Having had the mObridge unit fitted on Wed I can say so far I'm very happy with it. Having over 10,000 tracks on my ipod does seem a little excessive so I'll probably trim the playlists somewhat (I've actually just ordered a 160GB iPod for home/office so I'll 'cull' the car iPod). Controlling the music selection as already mentioned takes a bit of getting used to, but after playing with it for 10 minutes I think I have it sussed. The total cost for supply and fit was £420, which is far better than Porsche Swindon quoted.
